Lump in neck below ear and just behind jaw (Cancer: Lymphomas board)

6th May 2004
I have a lump in my neck just below the ear lobe and just behind the angle of my jaw. I went to an ENT who said it could be a swollen gland or a cyst. The bump is about a centimeter in diameter. Maybe slightly more. But it is not a loose bump that moves around. It feels like it is a bump in the tissue. I would say the bump is firm but not hard.

Doc gave me Keflex (antibiotic) for 10 days and wants to see me in 14 days. He is slightly leaning toward a swollen gland but would not rule out a tumor. He thinks it is an inflamed node. If it doesn't go down in size, he wants to do a fine needle aspiration.

Any thoughts anyone?

Hi there  your situation is alot like my husbands.

He had a huge mass from his ear to his chin that was out

wise the size of a baseball or bigger. He went to the ER

and like you was put on keflex the ER doc called it a

submandibular mass and said to get follow up care asap.

This was a ordeal with clinic doctors and dragging it out

to long. They also mentioned cancer and after sticking him

with a 19 gage needle said the mass was solid and not

fluid filled. He had a cat scan and a nodule was found on

his upper lungs and he was sent to a surgeon. The surgeon

my  first told us keflex was the wrong antibiotic

and that is why it did no good. He then knew right away

it was fluid filled and drained 3 containers of nasty gunk

first visit and almost 2 more on 2nd visit. It was not

cancer but one nasty infection/ cyst. He goes back Thurs.

to find out when they will remove it they wanted all the

fluid out first. They put him on two stronger antibiotics

and hubby is feeling great. :bouncing: All in all for us

from the day he went to the ER it was drug out for 8 weeks

to get a answer the waiting was terrible. Most docs work

alot faster sounds like your doctor is moving quickly ;)

Hope all turns out for the best. Is your lump tender? My

hubbys was and we were told that is a good sign. His felt

very hard but that is because of the mass of infection he

had I about threw up when I seen the gunk that came out

of him { just flat out nasty  } Haylee

Good news....I think. 72 hours after I started taking Keflex, the node completely disappeared. I actually had significant improvement after 48 hours. I was surprised that it cleared up since it was quite hard and about a centimeter and a half wide.

I guess this is good news. Now I hope that it just doesn't come back.
