Quote NHone: Every increase in number of medications just increases the risk of interaction and decreases the possibility that they can figure out what is and isn't helping. I know doctors get angry when pharmacists say this....but her explanation is that doctors just don't understand the chemistry behind medications.
In keeping with that thought, doctors that treat medically gain their knowledge (good or bad) from drug sales people and may determine efficacy by patient feedback! The treating doctor does not have the time to research, nor experience and training.
Between visits with patients, I can't help but hear a salesman giving a pitch, double blind studies, results, blah blah. It happened again Tuesday just outside the closed door to my room prior to the visit with the doctor.
Regarding Lipitor: Tuesday's visit with the cardio and review of lab test (in part): Chol 168, HDL 52, LDL 98, trig 88...LDL/HDL 1.9!? Expected is 2.5-4.0. The cardio stated Lipitor will clear arteries and prescribed 10mg daily.
I have been treated medically for heart failure starting 3 years ago. Coreg 12.5 increased to 25mg, lisinopril, furosemode (phasing out as I am no longer in heart failure mode), isosorbide, digoxin, aspirin and now Lipitor (given samples provided by sales) and after reading this thread, I may not fill prescription. My numbers don't appear to be a problem except for LDL/HDL!
