stage 4 friend (Cancer: Lung board)

21st June 2006
Hi, My mom is stage IV NSCLC with liver mets. She is currenlty a 2 year survivor and is 82 yrs old. She has tolerated treatment well, The first line chemo Taxol/carboplatin did leave her feeling wiped out and she was unable to do much then she developed a pneumonia and urinary tract infection which left her feeling like crap but after starting Iressa and antibiotics ( next month being switched to Tarceva) she improved by leaps and bounds and soon was feeling better then she had in years. The lung tumor went away and liver mets shrank. The liver mets did start drowing again so she was taken off Tarceva and put back on chemo, Alimta and continued feeling great until 6 months later when the mets started growing again and she was swithced to Taxotere and gemzar. She tolerates them well but they do drop her blood counts so she takes procrit and neupogen and feels fatigued often but she still manages to do alot of things and goes to work two mornings a week. So tell your friend it is possible to have have life with cancer treatment. JanMarie
