Hi all. I've suffered from migraine with aura since I'm about 18 (now 38). I've been able to control them with antidepressants, Verapamil and Imitrex or even Aleve for aborting. Well it's been 6 months since I've had a migraine (knock wood!) and about 3 weeks ago I started with a new pain in my head. It is located right above my left temple and started out occurring every 2 minutes or so in that exact spot. Pain was not icepick though---more of a moderate but very brief pulse. Because of my history, my primary sent me to the ER a week ago. My CT was normal and the neurologist thought it was probably related to my cervical spine. Had an MRI of this region and they saw some degneration/arthritis. I saw my own neurologist the following Wedneday (4 days later) and he put me on Indocin 3 times a day (thought perhaps it was a Cervicogenic headache). It helped but didn't stop the pain and I'd find that after a few hours I needed another dose. Then after 24 hours it wasn't working at all. So this past weekend he told me to try Vioxx (up to 50 MG a day). It has also helped slightly but still having pain and now when I have it, it's really a general pulsing pain not an "every 2 minute" type. Still in the same location. Friday I had an MRI and an MRA but don't know the results. Neuro expected them to be normal but checked just in case since it had been 3 years since my last one. I think my neuro seems to think this is an icepick type headache but the pain is nothing like a pick--not nearly that severe. My question is what will be do next now that the Indocin and Vioxx really aren't providing enough relief. I am functioning but this constant nagging pain is really getting me down/depressed.
By the way, it seemed to help last night when I slept on the side of my head that hurt. Could that mean something? What would it mean?
I'm used to migraines but this is new to me and really odd. I want some kind of explanation and I'm realizing that that is not so easy to get---even with all the modern tests they have nowadays.
Anyway, if anyone has any ideas, would love to hear. Oh by the way, I've been on a low-carb diet (no sugar, flours, rice, pasta, potatoes) for 6 months now and this seems to have really helped with my regualr migiraines.
