I have taken beta-blockers off/on for 6 years for an arrhythmia. I have been getting allergy shots for 4 years...I can go off of them in December (YAY!!!). The allergist office knows that I am on them, but I have been "sneaky" and still take them--they tell me that I should stop taking them, but that is the only treatment that there is for me for the heart issue.
I was in getting retested a few weeks ago when a guy had a reaction to his allergy shot--come to find out, he was on a beta-blocker. They gave him benedryl, a shot of epinepherine, a breathing treatment, and he did not improve, so he he ended being taken to the hospital by the ambulance.
I am allergic to all the grasses that they tested me for, most of the trees, other stuff...but I have a SEVERE allergy to tomatoes and red wine. When I refilled my epi-pen last year, the pharmacist notified me of the potential interaction between Inderal and epinepherine: "cardiac arrest, stroke, or death." Hmmm...tough choice which one I would prefer...so was at the cardiologist the next day to switch my meds to metoprolol. My tomato allergy has gotten so severe, that after I see the doctor next Monday, I will probably be quitting my job--restaurant management, as I have had so many minor reactions there, and the severity is increasing.
I know I'm not *supposed* to take the beta-blocker at all according to the allergist, but I *have* to take it...otherwise I would probably not even be able to work from my heart problem. I know not to take the beta-blocker on the day of the allergy shots, but I never know when you are going to be exposed to the things I'm severely allergic to...so after seeing the guy not respond to treatment from being on the beta-blocker, I am pretty concerned. Figure there has to be others who are on beta-blockers and have life-threatening allergies.
