Chest Discomfort (Open to All Health Related Topics board)

5th January 2008
Hi,

The last few days I've been experiencing mild discomfort on the left side of my chest. It is fairly constant and quite annoying to deal with. It is not tender to touch, maybe becase it is located beneath the ribcage around the left nipple.

About 8 months ago I had pneumonia, pleurisy, and empyema. A chest tube was inserted on the left side of my chest to releive the fluid. The pain is not near the chest tube scar, but rather in the area that showed the scar tissue on the chest x-ray approx. 4 weeks after the surgery. I noticed after the surgery i was having pain while inhaling deeply, but the doctor said it was probably just the pleura rubbing against the lung (I think he said something like that). The pain is in the same area as this, but does not increase with movement or breathing.

I went to the hopsital yesterday and the doctor said it was probably just scar tissue. It kind of struck me as odd, considering I have never felt this discomforting feeling before. I first noticed the pain when coming off of a cold a couple days ago.

I am waiting for someone to analyze a chest x-ray and was wondering what the possible methods are to relieve this discomforting feeling. Pain medicine such as ibuprofen does not seem to do anything.
