Hi all, you crack me up!!!
not2bad's theory was basically what the doctor told me when I begged him to let me have my tonsils out years ago. The stuff that's coating them inside is mucus and sloughs off and gets mixed up with the food or other impurites that are in the saliva..etc. Mucous in the tonsils protects the body from the bad stuff that goes in through the mouth, the same as the nose does.
But, when the tonsils are overloaded from constant viruses, bacteria (usually strep), they can't clear up and work efficiently for the body anymore...so, they are taken out. There's nothing like having two balls at the back of the throat with concentrated bacteria being constantly swallowed. Yum!
I suppose the name of the stones could be "tonsil poop" or "tonsil snot", but those names are already taken by other orifices...maybe there is a clinical name for them? Ah, another quest!!
cassandra2000 - I have itchy ears and use hydrocortisone (prescribed) on a q-tip (those things can be used for other things than squeezing tonsils). They're mostly itchy at night and I just dip one side into the cream, and twirl away. I use the other side for the other ear. Of course....I am realllly careful! BUT it feeels sooooo goooood!! Ahhh!
I found the brand name Q-Tips SUCK!! I use the brand from SuperStore. They're more flexible, and the cotton tips are wound tightly. The Q-tips hurt, also!
