This one is for Bad breath

Tea Tree Oil: This is a naturally occurring substance that disinfects. It has been used for generations and was extremely popular before antibiotics were available. Some people who prefer to use natural products like to try mouthwashes and toothpastes containing tea tree oil.

Hydrogen peroxide: This is another substance that has been used for long time in many applications and in the mouth has been used to treat periodontal disease. If incorporated in a mouthwash in the correct dose it has an oxidation effect but also has a debridement perfect because of the bubbling action that results when it is swished around in the mouth. It helps remove debris from the dorsum of the tongue and the cheek surfaces. Some dentists also believe it assists in cases of active periodontal disease.

Triclosan: This anti-bacterial agent has been passed by the relevant authorities as being safe to use in mouthwashes. It is usually present in a very low concentration and has a lasting effect. It is regarded as safe having been used for long time in skin creams

Cetylpyridium: This is another antibacterial agent that also has a lasting effect and helps reduce anaerobe numbers.

Chitosan: This is a substance used in other areas such as weight loss products. It is made from the exo-skeletons of shellfish and should therefore not be used by persons who have a shellfish allergy. It action is to combine with other compounds and pass through the intestinal tract to be excreted.

CoenzymeQ10: This is a compound that we make ourselves and hence is biocompatible. As we age some of us seem to be deficient and so supplementation is advised by some clinicians especially cardiac specialists. More recently it has been found to help control periodontal disease in some people. It is expensive but some toothpastes do contain this compound.

Folic Acid: Supplementation of this compound is advised for a number of conditions and it has been suggested that folic acid mouthwashes and toothpastes will help in cases of periodontal disease.

Lacttoferrin: It has been suggested that this compound is a bactericide that helps to interfere with the adhesion of bacteria to gum tissue. This would assist in the control of periodontal disease.

Xylitol: This is a natural sweetener used in many foods and oral hygiene products. It is claimed to reduce the incidence of dental caries but I have not seen any claims that it reduces the incidence of periodontal disease.
