Is this a UTI? (Women's Health board)

4th January 2007
Are you drinking plenty of water? It's so hard to tell if it's a UTI, as there are soooo many different symptoms of a UTI. The urine output, smell and color makes me wonder about your fluid intake.

With a history of a previous kidney infection, being prone to yeast infections (I went through a several-year period of constant yeast infections, too), tenderness over your left kidney, I'd get in to see a doc as soon as you can. Here in the States, you can get UTI home test kits at the drugstores. Do they sell these where you are?

The antibiotics you would take for a UTI are usually pretty specific for a UTI (Floxin, Macrobid). I used to think all antibiotics would kill all bacteria, but several doctors -- and a dentist -- have told me this is not so. So I wouldn't think it odd that an antibiotic for strep would have no effect on your urinary system.

Keep in mind, too, that antibiotics can wreak havoc on our digestive systems. My last UTI, the antibiotics caused me more pain in my stomach/GI system than the actual pain/discomfort from the UTI itself. Eating yogurt can help this.

Anyway, just wanted to throw some ideas out there, but I really think you need to get to a doc as soon as you can.

Hope you get to feeling better soon :)

Oh, and always, always wear cotton underwear as long as you're prone to yeast infections.
