need help getting off fioricet (Addiction & Recovery board)

2nd August 2007
i would think at those high daily amounts it would really be difficult to just really navigate thru a day.unlike narcotics, fioricet is a barbitruate(a big downer) and i know it made me very very tired and just want to lie down all the time when i was placed on it for tension headaches a couple years back.while most narcorics appear to actually do the opposite in making people more functional.going off of barbs also can present possible siezure activity issues as well,if i remember right.i do think your doc has the right idea for you.you will need the help and advice of someone who is very familiar with the properties of barbs, espescially at the amounts you are taking.from what you have stated, your little world is about to kind of go out from underneath you if you don't do something positive for yourself right now.there are many other options to try and control migranes.i have had them since age 13(i am now 46)there was not anything actually availiable back then to even begin to really treat migrane, just alot of ice packs on my head and staying in my very dark bedroom til it cycled thru.midrin really works well for mine.i have been on that now since it first hit the market back when i hit around age 18.it was a flippin godsend for me and gave me my life back.

i am wondering if when you did try the other options for your migranes if they really did work for you but considering the addiction issue you told your doc that they didn't?it is just something we addicts do when we want to justify staying on our drug of choice.it may be worth it to give them a try now that you are at the point where you KNOW it is just time to do the right thing?

i am just wondering if what you have there is a true migrane type thing or just severe tension headaches.i am only wondering since nothing,i mean not even the strongest narcotics will actually work on my true migrane type headaches, they will only respond to the midrin.nothing else even works a little bit to take the edge off, only my anti migrane med.midrin is a really great 'abortive' migrane med.it gets rid of the HA and the aura that always starts the syndrome going at the very very beginning, that is when you actually take it.do you get that aura pre HA or just the sudden onset HA?

have you ever consulted with a neurologist about the nature of your headaches?ever had any brain testing done at all to really see what may be going on in there?you just need to gear the right med for the appropriate type of headache trigger.it works much more effectively.you just need to be able to actually manage your HA with something other than the fioricet in order to even begin to get off of it.but i do think your docs referral suggestion is a very good one.he/she can do the evaluation just to see what your best plan of action would be given the med you are currently addicted to.i do wish you luck with this.it is just the very first step here in getting yourself out of this self destuctive cycle.please keep me posted on how things are going for you,K?marcia
