Quote from moonlight:Maybe look into Ultraset.
It is non-narcotic but habit forming.
Yes and no. It may be listed as a non-narcotic, but it is a synthetic opioid analgesic. Ultram (which is tramadol) and Ultracet (tramadol with tylenol) are both effective for most people, but not all. But they are both addictive also.
Try any NSAIDs (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory) yet? Motrin 600-800mg, Relafen, Cataflam, ect. can help ypur pain med work better, as can muscle relaxers.
Vioxx, Celebrex, and Bextra all seem to work well for bone pain (arthritis, etc) but dont do much for disc or muscle pain.
In order of strength, pain meds to ask your dr about: Darvocet and Tylenol with codeine; to Endocet, Percocet, vicodin, Lortab, Tylox, Percodan; to dilaudid, demerol, MS Contin, MSIR, Nubain, Talwin, Roxanol, Roxicet.
Not every med works for each person, even for the same condition. Keep in close contact with your health care provider to change meds as often as necessary until you find what works for you, with the least amount of side effects. Also, your body will build up a tolerance to most medications. After you have been using it for a period of time (which is different for everyone), the effectiveness starts dwindling, until it does nothing at all for you. Take one for a while, then switch to another, then go back to the first one.
Also be careful when you take the med (dont want to sound too redundant or elementary here, but bears repeating). Dont wait til the pain is severe to take it. Using the health care professionals' own pain scale, use 1 to 10 to rate your pain, with 1 being very mild (a bump on your arm) and with 10 being pain so severe you would go to the emergency room to have it treated. Dont wait until your pain is a 7 or 8 or 9 before taking the med; the med will have a very hard time catching up with the pain. Never go beyond a level 5 or 6 before you take your med.
Also, if you take your med on a full stomach, after you eat, it will take longer to take effect, If you want it to kick in quicker, take the med, then eat something.
There are MANY pain meds available to us. It just takes some work to find the one thats best for YOU, coz its not the same for everyone.
Good luck!
