Sharp, needle like pains in jaw and tongue area (General Health board)

8th January 2007
my mother in law has tri-geminal neuralgia which sounds quite similar to your symptoms and involves the tri, or three segmented nerve that runs along the side of the face and causes pain in the teeth, gums, jaw and up to the ear area. I accidentally read your message and noticed I had an answer. Of course, dentists are known to fail in diagnosing tri geminal neuralgia but neruologists are very familiar with it. Many sufferers go a long time before having a proper diagnosis and I believe treatment is usually in the form of a nerve regulating drug such as gabapentin and also Elavil, the anti depressant that is prescribed for nerve pain.
