   Allergic Fungal Sinusitis (Allergies board)

16th February 2003
You can research it yourself.
I had something very similar to AFS (allergic fungal sinusitis)in that I inhaled too much moldy dust from an old box of photos this past Nov. We had opened this box and left it in our LR for two days before I realized why I was sooo sick. My lungs ached so bad; I was sweating so much but my skin felt cold; my sinuses and ears were so stuffed up. I was soo sick.

We got rid of the boxes and I felt instant relief. However, I now have chronic sinusitis. My ct scan showed a total blockage on the left maximallary sinus cavity and some on the right.
I researched AFS which is similar to allergic pulmonary fungus. I asked 4 other docs just 2 mos ago about taking some anti-fungal medication. I figured it couldn't hurt. They all said NO.
My new ENT looked at my ct scan, heard my story, read my past medical reports (had 2 other attacks 5 years ago), gave me a skin mold test, read my serum cortisol
level and then put me on Diflucan and 20 mg of prednisone for 6 alternating days. I'd say after the first treatment day, after alot of gook came out of my sinus cavities, it was pretty much gone. I'm still finishing up my medicines. I'm not sure why taking the Diflucan with 20 mg of prednisone worked so well--but it did. The prednisone was probably a bigger boost to my immune system to help Diflucan rid me of the fungal ball.
You'll read that a "fungal ball" is mostly lodged in the maximallary (cheek) sinus cavities and that they have to do surgery usually to dislodge it. My ENT doesn't believe in sinus surgery. Claims it seldom works and comees back.
