differin vs. retin-a micro (Acne board)

5th August 2004
I was on regular retin-a but couldn't tolerate it. Differin doesn't make my skin absolutely perfect, but it definitely helps. My doc usually plays around with my morning meds which I tolerate better instead of trying different retinoids.

I have very very very mild acne... I get 2 pimples a month and its totally devastating for me!

So my doctor put me on 200mg of Doxycycline in the morning and Differin Gel its been more than a week and no more break outs!

Differin Gel made my whiteheads and blackheads vanish and finally my pores look smallers and my fine lines on my forehead reduced!

I apply Differin Gel in the morning and use Benzoyl Peroxide (ZapZyt) at night....

I tried retin-a or the generic brand version, (samething really besides price) and that thing beat the living ***** out of my face. IT was completely red and hurts (not sure if i want to blame the retin-a for teh scar marks though). After like 5 weeks, it slowly started to get use to it, but even then my face still was dry and hurts. Bascially it was red a lot. I'm currently on Benzamycin in the morning sinceit wokred well for me back when i was in high school (but then i had very mild acne) and stayed on it for a while and never really had a break out but stopped using it and well ended up breaking out. Instead of going back on bezamycin i tried proactiv, that perpetuated the problem, so i went to my derm who prescribed me retin-a then i tried it with doxycyline 3 months later adn it still didn't work. So long story short 6 months on retin-a and along with 3 months of doxycyline (last 3 of the 6months i took doxycycline along with retin-a). Ya, lets just say, taking doxycycline along with retin-a makes your face even MORE red. But i'm currently back on benzamycin for aobut 4 months and it seems to be better than the retin-a/doxy combo but i'm still breaking out a bit (two pimple a week). Not big but ya, beats the pimples i was getting with ret/doxy combo. But now i'm on Differin at night (3rd day) and benzaymicin in the morning. Hopefully it'll work out.

I went to the Dermatologist at the end of March and was prescribed Differin gel along with Benzaclin and I can't believe the results I've gotten in such a short time. My redness dissappeared and my breakouts are down to one pimple max a month.

When you say benzaclin is that benzamycin? And also do you think it was the cmbo of the two meds or just more to do with the differin or benzaclin (which i assume is a typo for benzamycin)? Also did you get the intial break out although i am aware everyone is different and some people may not get it at all, the intial break out. also, do you use differin at night and benzamycin in the morning or differin at night and benzymicin in the morning and night?
bascially:
method 1 ) differin @ night, benzamycin in the morning
method 2) differin @ night along with bezamycin and then benzamycin again in teh morning

all this for 2 pimples a month...? I'd KILL to get only 2 pimples a month!

At night, I apply the differin first all over my face, then I wait a couple of minutes to apply the benzaclin. I'm sure it is similar to what you're using. This combo doesn't really dry my skin out too badly, but in the mornings I'll apply some pond's replenishing moisturizer lotion w/ spf 15 then my benzaclin and haven't had any problems with breakouts. Now I know this combo may not work for everyone, but I'm just happy to finally find something that works for me.

I believe benzaclin and benzamycin maybe the same. Is your benzaclin bascially like a benzoperoxide and antibiotic in a gel/cream form? Because thats what benzamycin is i believe, composed of an antibiotic and benzoperoxide that you put on your face, and most people that treid it had great resutls with it. Currently using it, but realized i should be puting it all over my face instead of as a spot treatment like what all those obnoxious instructions for topical meds indicate liek differin (dunno how it woudl be effective if you put it around the affected area only).

Yes, that's what benzaclin is. I was reading about benzoyl peroxide and a doctor said for it to be effective that it has to be applied to your whole face and not just on your breakout areas, and this seems to work for me.

Cool, i thought so then. My dermatologist told me however to just use benzamycin in the morning and differin at night, but i'm afraid that it won't be as effective if i do that however. But also i'm afraid that applying benzamycin and differin at night might be too much for my face to handle. Any chance your dermatologist commented on whether it would be okay just to use bezaclin once a day instead of twice? I just started using differin, so i'm thikning maybe i should ease into it before using benzamycin twice a day along with differin

When my doctor prescribed differin and benzaclin, I was told to use the benzaclin twice a day. I don't think it will hurt to use it once a day and just differin at night. Just make sure you wear a moisturizer w/ sunscreen because of the sun sensitivity during the day. Just be patient and if you find down the road this combination is not working for you, ask your doctor to prescribed something else because some medications work better for different people. Oh, and don't be afraid to keep using the products if you have an initial breakout, that happens sometimes but eventually your skin could clear up w/ continuous use.
