Switch from regular Ortho Tri-Cyclen to Yasmin with success? (Acne board)

14th January 2006
I've tried a lot of BC pills in the past (including OTC and Yasmin). About 3 months ago I switched from generic OTC to generic Desogen (Apri). I definitely like the Apri better. Everyone's different, but I tend to like BC pills that have a constant hormone dose, NOT phasic BC pills like OTC where the hormone level changes. Check out this link: www. wdxcyber.com/ncontr13.htm - it might help you with a pill selection.

Thanks for finally replying ladies! Sorry if my previous posts seemed b****y! HeHe...I was just getting a little bit anxious about switching pills!! ;)

Peachy - glad you found something that worked for you! I had problems with generic OTC (Trinessa) in my first few months, but got a DAW (dispense as written) from my gyno to get the brand name. Even though it was more expensive, it helped lessen some of the side effects (BTB, moodiness) I was experiencing with generic at the time. I just wish the switch would have helped my skin!
Do you save a lot of money using generic BCP (Apri)? If Yasmin doesn't work out for me (which I hope it does...I am so sick of being disappointed), I might look into it....I know Bordergirl has had success with Desogen! Good Luck!

skimom - I understand what you mean about tri-phasic pills...on OTC, my skin changed every week that the hormones changed. Also, the week of placebo pills (period week) my skin was always more clear! Before I started BCP, I used to break out horribly during the week of my period! Weird how things change huh? By the way, I just took my first Yasmin pill tonight...I will keep you posted on my progress! Good luck with finding something to help your daughter!

bahamagirl - I'm glad your regime is working for you. Whether it is Proactiv or Yasmin, something is working...I would definately keep up your current system!! BTW, did you experience an initial breakout on Yasmin? If so, how long did it last?
I am in a wedding in April, and I hope my skin is better by then...if Yasmin helps get rid of hormonal cystic acne like you said, I will love it!! :)

Hello!

I'm currently an undergrad who will be graduating soon and is networking her butt off in new job(s) in companies I want to work in after graduation. I totally understand about what you mean in putting your best face forward. I'm working in luxury hotels where image means something so I feel the additional pressure as well.

But I digress, I had used desogen before and experienced AMAZING results. My skin was clear and acne was a thing of the past. Funny how quickly you forget about what it feels like and neglect the acne boards when you clear up isn't it?

Anyway, I have heard good things about Yasmin and horrible things about the ortho's lo and high. I used the high and stopped it because it was making me depressed!

I stopped desogen and my skin went to crap so I'm starting it again this Sunday. I've also started clindamycin while washing with cetaphil. I'm not really experiencing GREAT results quite yet- but I'll give it all some more time. However, I'm very confident that when I begin desogen I'll have less acne to worry about- not to mention lose a little weight.

Good Luck with the Yasmin, but if it doesn't work so well on your acne (it will!) give Desogen a try.

Thanks Michellala!

Good luck with your graduation and your return to the wonderful world of BCPs! ;)

I have heard a lot of good things about Desogen, but wanted to try Yasmin first because of the drospirenone (Spiro) in it. I gained weight on OTC (about 15 lbs!) and wanted to see if losing a little water weight would help me get started on the right track! BTW, I didn't know that Desogen can help people lose weight! How much weight did you lose the first time you took it? Were you dieting/exercising more at the time as well?

Oh yeah, be sure to give your regimen a few months to start working...like anything, you might have an initial breakout! I am fighting through a small one right now.

I just hope that I can continue to try and put my best face forward, even though I may not feel confident all of the time. Keep us all posted on your progress as you re-start Desogen! :)

Thanks Laura!

Well, for some reason it actually suppressed my appetite. I don't know why or if that's common, but I didn't complain. Whether or not desogen helped me lose weight can be totally in my head. I know I didn't gain weight and that's a major plus when dealing with any pill.

I also know what you mean by giving my regimen some time. I'm actually working on leaving the house with no makeup these days, not because my skin is better but because the makeup can't help and I have to be able to feel free when I want to leave the house- not worry about having enough time to put on makeup.

I didn't know Yasmin had Spiro- that's an awesome combination. I think you'll do great and good luck with it all!
