Kidney Stones While Pregnant (Pregnancy board)

22nd June 2004
My pregnancy was a NIGHTMARE with a 5mm kidney stone. I had it almost right from the beginning. They wil do nothing about it except give you pain meds and monitor the baby (may even admit you to hospital as they did me over and over). They can't remove the stone for you because of the baby you are carrying. Just some advice... I was terrified to have demerol while pregnant, but my baby is one month old now and shows no signs of any effects from the drug. All is well. If they give it to you in moderation, just to keep the pain under control, you should be alright, but ask your doctor first before taking my advice full heartdly. I was told that the stress and pain would cause more harm to the baby then the pain meds. As for passing it, I was different... I passed a smalled stone, the size of a grain of sand and when it came out of me, the pain was unbearable for about a minute. Anyways, I wish you luck with this and hope it is over for you. Mary Jane

Thank you for your help. The doctor offered me Demerol, but I wouldn't take it because they administer it through your butt  I chickened out. Plus, I would like to try natural child birth and I heard that having the pain from a kidney stone can feel like labor would feel. I went through the whole ordeal without any drugs!!! :D Maybe I can deliver a baby without them too! They did give me the strainers though. I haven't noticed anything yet. I can sort of feel it like it is right there ready to come out, but it has been a couple days and it doesn't seem to be moving. I have also been drinking TONS of water which I'm sure you know is soooo hard to do when you are constantly in the bathroom because of the baby as it is. I am feeling better though, thank God! And I hope that this never happens to me again. I am back to work, and they gave me Tylenol with Codine for the pain. I haven't needed any yet. I don't like taking any meds unless I really truely have to.

Well, thanks again! :)
