   Splitting amitriptyline (Depression board)

25th February 2004
Quote from dorri:
Update, I tried amitriptyline several times. My doctor told me to try and split them because it was hitting me too hard. I tried with a knife but it was impossible because it chewed the tablet up. I bought a pill splitter and it worked just fine. The split tablet didn't hit me like the full one did, however I noticed that I was getting vivid dreams, some of which weren't too pleasant. After a few times of this, it was enough for me and I quit taking them. From what I heard, this is a medication that most people do well on so I don't know why I reacted this way.

I used to take that medication for migraine & to help me sleep & it helped reduce them but had some side effects, bad dreams (which was less if I took the medication earlier), daytime sedation (which was no joke) and some others that made me come off it-because it was too much of a trade off. I don't know why your doctor prescribed it but hope you find something that helps you. With medications, it can be hit and miss until you find one that helps with minimal side effects. Everyone is different. What works for one doesn't for another. I had a reaction to 10 mg of cyclobenzaprine (a muscle relaxer to help the fibro) that clearly knocked me out and it was no good, I could not function on that at all. I was thin and think that may have had something to do with it. Let the doctor know how it makes you feel ok & maybe there is something else you could try?

Good Luck, Gemi
