Help for my son (ADD - Attention Deficit Disorder board)

21st May 2008
momofanangel,

My heart goes out to you and your children.

I'll do what I can to help. Just afraid that won't be much.

Your son's extremely high verbal skills and perceptual reasoning IQ scores are part of the ADHD signature. "Rarely does ADHD travel alone," as one author put it. Expect co-existing problems and be prepared to factor them into the prescription plan.

My best guess is your son's after-school crisis is ADHD rebound. When the meds wear off, ADHD symptoms return with a vengence. Generally extended release formulas lessen rebound. So can a less potent drug such as Concerta. And in certain cases all stimulants simply make matters worse.

Be sure to get a copy of Dr. Daniel Amen's book, "Healing ADHD ... its six subtypes." Study it. Then be sure to get Dr. Amen's latest prescription recommendations for each of the six subtypes.

Be forewarned that Dr. Amen is not loved by the psychiatric community. He book, his recommendations, work for me. They work for many others suffering from ADHD and other mental disorders. The proof is in the pudding.
