Ritalin-like and appetite (ADD - Attention Deficit Disorder board)

Ok, I assume we all face the fact that these drugs suppress appetite. What are your tips to make these kids eat a little bit more.
My daughter is 17, taking Concerta 36mg and her weight is now less than 85 pounds.

Seventeen and she weighs less than 85 pounds???!!! This, to me, is cause for alarm. Are you positive that she doesn't also suffer from an eating disorder? Have you discussed her weight recently with a doctor? I'm not sure that I could give my child a stimulant in this situation.

But that isn't what you asked. You asked for tips to get them to eat more. My best suggestion is caloric-rich beverages. After all, hungry or not, they do still get thirsty. My son lived on those yogurt smoothies for a long time. You might try milkshakes and/or ensure. If she is hungrier in the evenings than at other times (this seems to be common), load her up then. At 85 pounds, I'd feed her anything that she'll eat without worrying too much about nutritional value. I'd also be sure that she was on a good multivitamin/mineral combination.

Good luck!

Concerta is counterindicated in people suffering from anorexia, which is a high likelihood in someone weighing only 42 Kilo at that age.

Also, while antidepressants often cause weight gain, Prozac has been known to EITHER cause weight gain OR cause complete loss of appetite.

Thanks to both of you. Yes, her weight is actually around 42 kgs. She's taking also Prozac but that doesn't seem to have influence on her weight. I'll try to go on late dinners or snacks even that I know that she does eat at night. I bought a can of Ensure but it's still in the fridge. I give multivitamins but most of the times, she says the tablet is too big and it disgusts her. I found the GNC formula, special for teens, which is the smallest I could find here. I know there is some kind of manipulation which is the big argument between my husband and I. So I try to take one day at the time.

I would like to comment on this, I had the same experience and so did my 10 yr old neice. We both were taking Adderall. I would go for a week at a time and not eat. I would get disgusted (excuse spelling if wrong) by even looking at food.

We both had to get off Adderall and after a few months of not being on it and having time to rebuild our appetites. We both are back on med's, but at much smaller doses.

I am a 32 yr old male 154lbs 5'8" and I take 10mg in the morning and can take another 10mg at night if i want and this works great, for me. I was at 20mg a day twice a day when my problem started.

I dont know what she takes now, but i think it is Concerta or something like that. Her doctor GET THIS!!!! had her taking 50mg a day of Adderall. That is 10mg more a day than me and 40mg knocked me off my A**
