   Question... (Asthma board)

25th March 2004
Quote from bluebanana:
Have you tried taking you inhaler through a spacer, studies show thatit is as effective as a nebuliser in getting the drug into your lungs. The problem with nebulisers is that they use such large amounts of drugs in them, which can be good if you need it, but if you don't then a spacer should work. Maybe you could try that before spending out on a neb.
Hope you feel better soon. x x x

True, but sometimes you just need that misted medication & that amount, my doctors say it's important in a severe attack 2 get the medication 2 the smallest airways. But the keyword is severe attacks.. a spacer w/ your inhaler should do the trick, a nebulizer is 4 more severe forms of asthma, the kinds that can take a massive dip suddenly & need some treatment right away. The problem with nebulized albuterol & Xopenex, as a dancer & teacher you will find holding your form & keeping your muscles tight, keeping your balance will be off. I'm a gymnast and a dancer & I notice it's so much harder 2 do gymnastics/dance on a nebulized bronchodilator..makes ya real nervous also. It helps the breathing a ton, but it's so much harder 2 have good form.
I have noticed that albuterol helps the shortness of breath, but it can make a cough worse..b/c it's opening up the lungs & therefore making the cough deeper, in my experiences anyway.
So I would try the spacer w/ an inhaler, or maybe you could try diff bronchodilators like maybe Combivent. Talk 2 your doctor about it!
