So I have allergies...now what do I do?? possibly pregnant (Allergies board)

16th August 2006
I had the skin testing done today and apparently am "hugely allergic" (my dr's exact words) to dust mites and mildly allergic to lamb's quarter's (a weed...which happens to be what most of my front yard is comprised of  ).

Anyway, he prescribed Clarinex 5mg and Singulair 10mg. The problem is I may be pregnant (testing after this weekend...we are ttc and I'm on progesterone) and both of those drugs are Category C. I called my OB and am waiting for the nurse to call me back.

In the meantime I'm wondering what I do if I can't take meds? I've lived with it this long and I'll survive without them but after a free sample of Clarinex-D last week (stopped taking it so I could have the testing done) I realized how badly I felt not being able to breathe:) .

I would appreciate hearing anyone's experiences with allergies and pregnancy.

My biggest concern is that I have chronic tonsillitis (which is the reason my dr did the allergy testing to begin with) and I believe that's what's causing my night-time low-grade fevers. It can't be healthy to stay in a constant state of sickness throughout a pregnancy. I'll be bringing all of this up to my dr but like I said would like to hear other people's perspectives on it.

Thanks!!

I don't know about the Clarinex, but my doctor told me my Zyrtec is okay. (not pregnant yet, but planning to be) I know for a fact you can take benedryl during pregnacy. There are nosesprays you can use during pregnacy too. There is definitely a solution your allergist and OB can agree on.

With dustmites, the biggest thing is to get rid of them. Putting dustmite proof covers on your mattress, boxspring and pillows are an absolute must. You won't beleive how much better you will sleep until you do it. Leather furniture, if you can afford it, helps. The doctors will tell you to get rid of the carpet, but it isn't practical for most. But you can get powder that kills the dust mites that you sprinkle on the carpet and then vacuum up.

Thanks so much for replying!

I've noticed immediate benefits with the Clarinex (still uncertain what the Singulair is supposed to do...need to read up some more) but my tonsils are still inflammed and are actually worse since having the testing done (not blaming the testing per se...just pinpointing a date:)).

I also start feeling stuffy/crummy again about 8hrs after I take the meds and wake up pretty miserable which lasts until the meds kick in about 2hrs after taking them. So really I'm only getting about 6hrs of relief (I was on Clarinex-D...had a free trial...and felt that helped more).

Anyway, I'm kind of feeling muddled about all of it.

Can allergies cause nightly low-grade fevers?
