UTI symptoms persist after treatment (Urology board)

8th January 2006
I experienced the same symptoms after a recent UTI in october. I was prescribed cipro and symptoms went away. About a month later the urgency started again, and was put on Macrobid. The urgency DID NOT resolve. (I would urinate and still feel that constant need to go! Sometimes it was so bad that I couldnt stand for long periods and do daily activities). I saw a gynourologist who did a cystoscopy. The bladder infection did cause inflammation in my bladder lining that has not resolved. My treatment plan is to have medication instilled 1x/week directly into my bladder.

I had none of these problems prior to my recent bladder infection. So i had to learn the hard way that bladder infections can definitely leave you with bigger (yet fairly easily treatable) problems afterwards. So try to see a urologist or gynourologist, if you still have symptoms of a UTI and so signs of it on urine tests and cultures. ( i had several urine tests, and 2 urine cultures and there were no signs of infection.)

my urinary problems started last Dec. I had an infection and took Cipro for three days and the symptoms left. By mid- Feb the symptoms came back and I ended up in an emergency room some where in Georgia. The Dr. there said I did not have an infection but said I should see a urologist. We traveled on and I saw a urologist who did a cyctoscopy and ordered an IVP. All the tests came back fine but she said I had vaginal atropy and gave me estrogen cream to use every other day. I have been doing that now for nearly a year and I am still having symptoms if I eat or drink anything acidic. I am desperate for relief. Is there anyone out there who is post menopausal who has had a similar problem. HELP

Hi everyone...I'm new here and probably just as frustrated as anyone having to deal with this situation.

I've been fighting an average of 2 UTIs per month. SOme of them are indeed only in the urinary tract itself...or in the bladder, but more often than not it ends up in my kidneys.

This past Sunday evening, I went to minor emergency and was prescribed Cipro. 1000mg pills...one pill each day for 3 days. The last two weeks I've been vomiting, having extreme chills, headache, extreme fatigue. After the Cipro treatment which I finished on Wednesday, many of these symptoms are still with me. However, the last day of treatment, my Cipro pill ended up being expelled in my vomit. I was sooo sick. The chills won't go away and I cannot seem to do anything but lay around hoping for sleep. I'm tired of going to doctors who treat but do not get to the bottom of the problem. I feel for every one of you, this problem doesn't seem to be percieved by doctors as very serious or life-hindering. I'm at my wits end here, I don't know what to do anymore. It seems insurmountable.

I had a total of 6 UTI's in the last 3 months.

I finally went on a strong STRONG dose of cipro for 7 days and vitamin c pills and have finally kicked it.

My doctor recommended taking a good multi-vitamin (I take Vita-Lea) and I have been UTI-free for the past 4 months.

When I feel a flare-up come on, I take a hot bath (as hot as I can stand it to open my bladder to the hot water) and take Vitamin C (2000mg a day), and drink pure cranberry juice (from health food store).

Haven't had any problems since.

Hello, I got my first UTI in May of this year and was put on antibiotics for three weeks (one week break between the second and the third treatments). Right after the infection was resolved I got an inflamed bladder and it's now been two months. At first I was afraid I had IC but my urologist insists it's not because my symptoms are pretty mild (some urgency and slight jabbing sensation in the urethra or lower bladder after I urinate) and I had a long and nasty UTI right before the inflammation. My question to you is how long did your inflammation last? I know everyone is different but still... I'm getting very sick of this, not to count the anxiety it has caused me at times. I'm getting a cystoscopy in two weeks but my urologist predicts that it will be normal, just like my CAT scan and my pelvic exam. She is doing it to give me peace of mind. Thanks!

Has your urine been culture? I am sure it has --- I am 38, first UTI started 2 weeks ago - first on cipro, then culture came back as a staph so I was switched to bactrum, just finished this week - the slight stinging when I urinate continues and today my temp goes back up to 100 degrees....I am going today again...I am so nervous about this...thought this would be simple..not...

I'm so relieved to know that I'm not the only woman who has had bladder irritation that remains after a UTI has cleared up. It's been over a month since I started taking Macrobid antibiotic for my UTI. Took it for 7 days, and then 2 days later my symptoms started to come back. Went back to the doc & was put on 10 days of Cipro. I only took 2 days of it before I got a call saying my urine culture was negative. So I stopped taking it & I was fine for 2 weeks. Then I had the most stressful day of my life at work. That night my symptoms started coming back. 2 days later I was completely miserable. I thought the infection must have come back, so I started taking the Cipro that I had 8 days left of. It was making me the sickest I've ever been in my life with nausea, upset stomach, diarrhea, and complete loss of appetite. And it wasn't helping my urinary symptoms at all. I just wanted to crawl into bed & die. I went into my OB-GYN after 2 days on the Cipro & my urine was negative for infection. Decided to call a urolgist to make an appointment. He told me to stop taking the Cipro since it was making me sick, and also gave me a list of bladder-irritating foods to avoid. Went to my urologist apppointment yesterday, and again my urine was negative for infection. He did an ultrasound & pelvic exam, and said eveything looks good. All he did is give me 4 weeks of detrol-LA to try, and told me to avoid the list of bladder-irritating foods he gave me. He said sometimes after a UTI, the bladder can just remain irritated. Supposed to go back to him in a month. I can't live like this for a month! I feel like my bladder is full all of the time, even after I have just emptied it. Has anyone else found that stress aggravates their symptoms? And does anyone know of any herbal remedies to calm an irritated bladder?--cornsilk is one I saw mentioned, has anyone tried this & found it to work?

They give you a prescription of antibiotics... sometimes it's Bactrim or Cipro etc.. you take ONE pill after sex and somehow its suppose to help keep infections away.

I am the same way over here with my UTI. I just can't get a break at all, I have had this darn thing over 2 years with it getting better and coming back. I finally again, got some cipro and took it for 3 days, the bladder feels a little better but I still have the urgency. My kidney hurts too. It just sucks but I go everyday and just suck it up, because you have to. I know I complain alot about it and I shouldn't but it just sucks.

I have always had some kind of urinary problems, kidney infections as a kid, always having to pee alot and when I used to get nervous as a kid I would have to pee, when I got my hands wet, I had to pee. Now all of this is on me.

I hope my body just finally gets it and lets me live, right.

Well, now that I have vented, I think I shall go get a cup of Green tea to make me feel better.

Remember, if you are going to drink Cranberry Juice, dring the 100% juice with no sugar added. It tastes better to me.
