asthma and chest infection - in hospital (Asthma board)

8th July 2007
hi everyone
im actually on here regarding my partner,he has had asthma since childhood but never really suffered greatly with it,or should i say not been hospitalised with it,if he does too much exercise he uses his inhaler etc.but never been that out of breath to not be able to breathe badly.
3 eeks ago he started getting a very bad cough,he was put on amoxycillinfor 5 days which didnt clear it,infact it got worse so he went to the hosp and was given steroids, 8 a day i think, they didnt improve so he went back to the docs and they upped the steroids to 10 a day and changed the antibiotics to cephalexin.on thrusday evening he became very short of breath and had to be rushed to hosp where 4 days later he still is, they were not happy with his blood test results, they didnt tell us what the numbers meant but said his lungs were not functioning correctly and to kep him in,they changed him back to cephalexin and 12 steroids a day,he is on oxygen constantly and 2 hour nebulizers.this has gone on for 3 days now,and nothing seems to be helping, and i just dont kno what to say to the docs or ask, surely they should be doing more if there is no improvement, chest xray just showed infection nothing more serious, but could they be mising something? id really appreciate it if anyone else has had this experience and could give me some advice to go back to the hosp with, his peak flow just now is around 180-220 they said they want it over 400 before he can go home but he doesnt know what his normal level normally is,and it seems bit high,i am perfectly healthy and i can only get 350 on it? they also said he had low oxygen levels in his blood, and his blood pressure goes from high to low etc on daily basis, also heartrate was 121 yest which they said was high?
can anyone help me with this?
thank you
p.s. he is 23 years old.
