   infection question (Back Problems board)

13th January 2007
Hi Painman,

My son broke the talus bone in his ankle. 5 days after his third surgery in Sept.06, which was a fusion, he developed a sepsis staff infection. He then underwent a 4th surgery for debrivment (sp) in all three areas of where they operated on. He also had a pretty large hematoma that they were able to drain.

He was in the hospital for 4 days on various antibiotics until they found the one that worked for him. Then sent home with a pic line in and intravenous antibiotics every 8 hours for 6 weeks. He is presently on Cephalexin 500mg capsules four times a day until his ankle is fused.

He's still healing and doing fairly well. Not fused yet though. The really sad thing is that he is only 22 y/o, and his ankle is full of arthritis and eating the bone away. But the good news is that it could have been worse, as he had broke his ankle from a fall off the roof, and it was a two tier roof, his head was heading for the second roof. Had that happened, he would have broken his neck. So, the good lord was with him and watching over.

Were you on any antibiotics when you left the hospital the first time? Hopefully everthing works out fine for you.

Take care and please let us know what you find out.

Bernie
