Is This Normal???? (Ear, Nose & Throat board)

26th February 2007
Babe70,

Venting is part of this boards design.. better out than in.. in most cases. I lived in England for 10 years, I can sympathize. I loved it and the people, but I like my health care now much better. Sure we pay for it, but sometimes you have too.

I agree that I think I am harbouring an antibiotic resistant infection! My boss's wife is a nurse and she had a look today and said that it could be the start of an abscess but to go and get is swabbed as it didn't look good! I know what you mean about having no end of problems trying to treat an infection, as I am allergic to penicillin I tend to get messed about with loads of different antibiotics until my body generally fights off the infection itself! Or so it seems. Erythromycin and Erythroped - commonly given over here if you are allergic to penicillin - is useless for me! I am also allergic to co-amoxiclav (augmentin) - I am sure that all these years of antibiotics for my damn tonsils and throat have left my body immune to nearly all of them!

Yeah, most GP's and MD's in particular do not like to pull cultures. One it is unpleasant two it is another added expense. One has to wonder though.. if you cultured it the first time and found out how bad it was and what was needed to kill it.. if you would come out ahead in the long run.

Not suprised about Augmentin.. it is a three part combination and has ampicillian in it.. Amoxicillin is the next generation Penicillin derivative... thus it is penicillin getting you once again.

Unfortunately for sinus and dark cavity infections, it has been clearly documented that cillians and cephalosporins are the best. Also unfortunate, is that there is a 20 % allergic crossover subset for those with penicillan allergies to also be allergic to cephalosporins. Keflex, Ceclor, and Cefzil are some of the more common cephalosporins. I am lucky and can take cephalosporins. It is worth a try if you haven't, just be prepared for a ppossible allergic reaction.

Erythromycins are the next common type of anti-biotic and cheap.. but not the best for sinus and throat related infections... but the cost factor makes it a preferred prescription. If they try to give you a 'Mycin again insist of a steriodal dose pack and refill as well, so that it can enter and permiate your system quicker and you can be sure to have enough to kill it. Hopefully your GP will be able to fix you up with something better and solve the problem.

Best of Luck,
MG
