Sinus problem, need help! (Ear, Nose & Throat board)

17th January 2007
Okay here it goes.

Sinus infections are tricky. They are dark cavity infections. That means the anti-biotics take a longer time to filter into the area and attack and eliminate the infection. Most ENT's recommend anti-biotic treatment of a severe sinus infection for 21 to 28 days.

The Z-pak is a five day treatment is my memory serves me well and were you only given 7 days or 14 days of levaquin? As a result of two short toerm dosing of anti-biotics your infection may have been beaten back but not elimated.. thus it has re-emerged stronger than before and resistant to two strains of anti-biotics. I used to have chronic sinusittus and sinus infections 9 months out of the year. I know what you are going through.. and GP's just don't attack sinus infections aggressively enough the first time in my opinion.

What you need to do is get more anti-biotics of a different family and hammer it out of your head.. Z-pak's are Mycin based.. Levaquin is fluoroquinolone based.. The best is still available.. cephalosporins.. these target sinus infections well. My favorite is Cefzil, but Ceclor is another good one. Request 14 days with a refill of 14 days or 28 days up front. If a month of anti-biotics doesn't take it out, you need to have it cultured and a CT of your sinuses taken upon consultation with an ENT.

Best of luck.
