Meds- AM or PM (High & Low Blood Pressure board)

28th April 2005
One of the benefits of being on 4 BP meds is that I get to split them up between morning and night. After experimentation and some months of juggling the changes, I take 32 mg Atacand, 4 mg Cardura and 25 mg Atenolol in the morning. I take 2.5 mg Norvasc at night.

Just curious about how you feel about the Cardura? It is next on my doc's list of "meds to try"
Thanks,

The Cardura has been fine. Mine is still not low enough.

The cardura has a side benefit for men. It also helps for BPH (benign prostatic hyperplasia) - enlarged prostate... Basically, it helps prevent you from having to get up to go to the bathroom at night.

Embarassing... but, you asked ;)

I was up to 8mg about a year ago and I actually had spells when my BP was too low.

For me, it's probably been the best over BP med. Norvasc also seems to help.

Sorry I embarassed you. Doesn't bother me, my husband is currently taking an alpha blocker for that reason too. He had surgery last March to remove 80% of his prostate.

Do you have to take the Cardura more than once a day? I also read it causes palpations. I hate any med that causes my heart to pound. That causes me super anxiety.

You say your pressure still isn't low enough? How high is it?

Thanks for the reply,
Cass

Not really embarassing, just real life :)

I take 4 mg/day (once). I used to take it in the evening, but now take it in the morning to avoid potential interaction with another med I take.

I don't think it makes much difference because the half-life is about 22 hours - quite long. Meaning it takes a long time for the level in your system to drop by much.

My BP over the last month is averaging 138/87 - pulse 81.

It's creeping back up and I'm scheduled for a recheck this coming month. When it was dropping low on me I was taking 8-10 mg/day in addition to my other BP meds. It dropped to 84/63. I felt light headed - that was my only symptom.

Cardura is an alpha blocker and is used for both high BP and enlarged prostate (BPH).

Hope that helps. Feel free to post any other questions.
