Quote from starling72:My doctor listened closely to my description of my symptoms and right away felt it was something with acid reflux (I went in fearing heart-related). He thinks that the valve at the lower end of my esophagus is getting irritated (and therefor more sensitive to heat/cold) by acid that gets trapped up in my esophagus and is "twitching" as a result. I was put on Nexium for a 10-day trial at the end of which I had already noticed that they were occurring less frequently. Subsequently, I was put on a 30-day prescription of Nexium 40mg and the flutters were all but gone by the end of that. He doesn't believe in over-medicating, so asked me to try Prilosec OTC for awhile and report back on how it worked. I'm nearly to the point where I'll ask to go back to Nexium and pay the $45/month for the medicine...I mean, Prilosec OTC is costing me $40/month anyway, so I may as well get the prescription-strength stuff that I know works for me, right?
You are a real sweetheart for responding just moments aftr I wrote this! I nearly am in tears reading your diagnoses. I feared that I might have those classical "esophagus spasms" that some people talk about that one has to take heart or blood pressure meds to quell. (I have low blood pressure, so couldn't take Cardizem, e.g.) I don't have pain with my burbles/flutters and solid food seems to go down the pipes as it should. I don't have trouble with liquids til afternoon & evening...then I notice that I can instigate the flutters sometimes (or burps at least) by drinking too fast or something too hot or cold. I've been messing with this for months & though I hate to admit my family practitioner is *ever* right, maybe he called it back in July, saying it was GERD-related. Huh!
I'll let you know what my gastroent. says next Friday. I think you just need to be on the Nexium a little longer---unless, of course, that kava tea works for you! : )
Please keep in touch--our symptoms sound really close in scope. Is/were your flutters worse when lying down? Mine are.
hugs,
Maggie C.
