people with severe headaches that can not be controlled by the usual means can be given narcotic pain killers. But they are only a bandaid effect. Some pain killers themselves can cause headaches,
codiene, darvocet and vicodin are always bad ones for me..
about 18 years ago I went to a neuorologist, who speacialized in headaches and chronic headache pain.
I know that a lot of medications have other purposes, and not always the what the drug company indended to be. So I am assuming that Neurontin is one of those drugs, a long term pain reliever and an anti-siezure medication.
The doctor I visited, of course rulled out any organic problems, utilized the MRI, standard x-rays, etc..
Took blood, an ekg, an eeg, etc...
The doctor doesn't like to prescribe anything that is addictive, as in a narcotic.
Remember Narcotic and other controlled substances will supress the pain, but does nothing to fight the headache itself, once the drug where's off, the headache reappears, evetually the the dosage prescribed doesn't work anymore, so the dosage goes up, or the drug is changed.. your body has become accustomed to the drug, and more is required for the same effect, I know some migraine suffer's may not have any other options, if the traditional ways fail
(ergot/caffiene, Imitrex (not for everyone.. )Midrin... midren mixed with additional drug or 2..
If your migraine can be cured by an OTC drug, chances are it wasn't a true migraine. Vascular headaches (which if u say u have these, most people will reply oh, migraines... ) Vascular headaches have the one sided pain as well, and some or no symptoms of a classic migraine.. but are typically less painfull, don't quote me on that, it's been a while..
Ok, so to make sure this doesn't into a novel,
I was prescribed, Amytripyline, which was later changed Trazodone (Trazodone is a weak SSRI, but I tolerate it better. ) Amytripyline was first prescribed at 300mg, I hallucinated on and off for 6 weeks, before I whined, it was dropped to 200, and years later 100mg.. I don't believe hallucinations is a common side effect.. I was also a Zombie for a few months, and then there's the memory issue Amytripyline causes in people, myself included.) But hey I slept a solid 8...9...uhh...10 hours..
second med, Inderal.. mellows u out.. I was also given calan, I no longer take it.. I no longer needed it. I was also prescribed phenergan. The doctor also gave me midrin and norflex, to take as needed..
They do prescribe anti-imflamatories as well for the treatment of headaches, however, I couldn't and still can not take NSAID's. They all caused too many stomach issues.. I told a few people that I was drinking too much and got an ulcer that way.... but, it wasn't from the alcohol... and no, I don't drink.. now.
Amytripyline, like all other medication, are not cure all's they keep your misery under control so you become free of what ails u. Amytripyline will NOT work overnight, it Is an Anti-depression drug..
And I NEVER got used to the sedating effect of it..
Amytripyline is also prescribed for just that, it puts u to sleep, and u sleep through the night, instead of waking up four hours later and not falling back to sleep. Never mix Amytripyline with Alcohol.
As for the migraines and other headaches they have been under control for a while..
which was better than every 10 days, usually beginning on a thursday and lasting 4-8 days a one sided miserable vascular headache..
