Tourettes Syndrome problems (Brain & Nervous System Disorders board)

18th April 2003
I was dx with sever Tourette's Syndrome when I was 9 years old. By the time I was 12 or so I had problems with ADHD, OCD as well as GAD. I only have problems with the OCD at the moment. On the Tourette's side I still have many tics that are very bothersome. The problem is this. I've tried every medications available but all of them had more side effects than I could handle. By the way I'm currently 22 years old. I was recently admitted to the hospital for what they said was a reaction to either prolixan or risperdol or both. I had severe stomach pains as well as a irregular heart beat with a BP of around 205/85. At that time they took me off of those meds. I don't have any other viable meds available that my doctors nor myself know about. So I'm only on Trileptal and Fluvoxamine (OCD) and nothing else. Neither of these drugs give me side effect problems. Now whats worrying me is that my blood pressure for my last 6 doctor visits were very high on the bottom number. For two or more years before that my top number was the high one but never my bottom number. My current average BP has been around 165/100 with my last visit reading of 168/100. My average before that time was always around 190-195/80-85. I'm worried because its for one thing reversed and also being high for about 6 months now. For those last 3 months out of the 6 I was put on a BP medication called Calan that didn't change my BP at all. I was advised to get a personal BP monitor because my doctor thought it may have been increased because of it being done at the doctors office. He says thats fairly common thing for some. Well my blood pressure is even higher right after I wake up in the morning and stays around the same after I eat breakfast. It goes down not more than 10 points on either side by the time 2pm comes around. I'm trying not to me long but this just doesn't seem right. My doctor told me that my GAD can cause my top number to go up fairly high which it has for many years but hes never seen either a child or an adult have the bottom number that high who has GAD. That didn't make me feel to confidant to say the least. What should I do from here.

Goodness, you've had your share! Is your doctor a specialist or a regular GP? You're BP needs attention and if your present doctor is not addressing it properly I would certainly consider going to someone else...even a cardiologist. Apart from Calan, were you ever put on any other BP meds?

Sorry for the very late reply. I've been busy. Just so you know I have had my heart check out and it look fine. I've also had a stress test as well. I'm no longer taking calan and my doctor is monitoring my BP for the next 2 months in case the med might of made it worse. Some of these meds have been known in rare cases to make BP worse so he wants to rule this out first. Oh by the way I do like and am sastified with my current doctor. When I was referred to a heart doctor I saw him for 3 visits and said nothing was wrong that he could find and said I no longer need to see you anymore. Just so you know my BP on my last visit was 165/102 which was the second reading 30 minutes apart with the first being 153/107. Also that was about 2 1/2 weeks after being off calan and any BP drug for that matter.
