Abruptly Stopping Ambien, Dangerous? (Addiction & Recovery board)

16th March 2005
Ambien is pretty new. I acts like a benzodiazepine but I don't think it is classified as a benzo. I'm pretty sure it works on the gaba receptors like benzos do. Benzos are xanax, valium, ativan, klonipin, and others. The protocol for detoxing these is typically a slow taper off of the drug. Decrease your dose by about 10% per week until you can quit entirely. Tell your doc you want to stop taking them and ask the doc about a taper program. You'll have some insomnia, for sure, but you won't die from insomnia.
