morphine w/d need answers (Addiction & Recovery board)

24th February 2005
Hey Morph,

Another day closer to ending the physical sickness. Your typing looks better this morning. Another night under your belt. The nights are the worst. Rest is very important but it is good to just lie down all day and try not to sleep until the night comes. That way you'll sleep better at night. The insomnia will stay with you for awhile but it won't kill you. Not being able to sleep is the last withdrawal symptom to go. It is aggravating but you will not die from insomnia.

Lisa is giving you some important information. The mental part of this thing is the hardest part (imagine that !!). After going through physical HELL your mind will begin to clear in phases. You'll go through a range of emotions including regret, self-doubt, self-pity, anger, anxiety, major depression....all the emotions. The emotions are heightened because your brain will not be dulled by the drugs. You'll be able to think again and it is very weird. Get prepared for it by locating some AA and/or NA meetings in your area. "Shop" the meetings until you find one you are comfortable with. The best meetings are the ones where "court papers" are NOT signed (the people in these meetings WANT to be there). Get yourself a sponsor. PLEASE prepare yourself for the mental part of this thing. You have to learn how to LIVE CLEAN. It's not always easy but it is MUCH EASIER than living with the dope.

REMEMBER WHAT YOU'VE BEEN THROUGH. DON'T FORGET THE MADNESS AND THE PAIN. Months from now, when things are looking good, you might forget the HELL you've been through and decide to just have a little poke. That little poke will start you into chaos all over again. Remember the chaos and the pain.

YOU ARE DOING GREAT !! What you've been through was very hard work. If you get through this(physical and mental) it will be the toughest thing you've ever done in your life.

For now you need to drink water, eat, rest, take a multi-vitamin in the morning, and if you are using Xanax or other "taper drugs" then these need to be discontinued. The Xanax(a benzodiazepine) can become a crutch that turns into another, more dreadful nightmare. Lack of sleep will not kill you and if you can go without the Xanax then you'll heal quicker. Watch that stuff because it is deadly. People die from Xanax withdrawal(usually big doses cold-turkeyed) but many people have problems when they withdraw from just a small dose.

Your body is fragile right now. Watch out for you body. While watching out for your body get prepared for the mental challenge. Get to those meetings as soon as possible. Only other addicts will be able to help you get through the mental part of it.

Many have been praying for you and are hoping that you make it through this. God bless you for getting this far. NEVER GO BACK TO THE DOPE. You've been through the worst of the physical part. There is light at the end of the tunnel. Welcome back to the world!! Glad you could make it.

Serenity is Yours
