Blood clots forever?? (Blood Disorders board)

17th June 2006
Hi. I am 52 but had a blood clot in my left leg 3 years ago. I ended up in the ER and eventually admitted for a number of other problems too (diagnosed with diabetes, kidney failure plus the leg clot)

When I was admitted I knew something was wrong since I hadnt been feeling right and my primary doctor wasnt sure what was going on either.

When I ended up in the ER the day before thanksgiving in 2003 they found that my left foot was cold and almost no pulse in my left foot area.

They found that I had a blood clot and surgery was done the day after Thanksgiving. Going into surgery I was told there was a chance of amputation. Luckily the leg was saved.

I was on coumadin for awhile then was put on Plavix with Bayer aspirin.
There was a question on the cause of the blood clot. So I went to a hemotologist recently and after blood work it was felt that I had an elevated homocysteine level and that was the cause of the blood clot. NO family history of blood clots. So I was taken off the Plavix and was told to continue with the Bayer aspirin 81 mg and also take another medication called Metanx.

Time will tell if it is working or not in keeping my blood work under control.

Keep us posted on how you are doing.

Allan
