Has Anyone"s Health Been affected By Baycol? (High Cholesterol board)

Quote from rstarre:
I know it been years since they pulled it off the market. I know the lawsuits involved. I for one had been on it for 6 months. Since then I have had health problems. They think I have Fibromyalgia. Supposed a muscle/tendon disease. But there is no real test for this. I hury everyday, I am stiff and I must take pain meds everyday to function. Some people died from Baycol and others did get another serious muscle disease. but I'm just wondering for people like me, who weren't on it for that long of time are surrering from some other type of muscluar/skeletal disease that may have been caused by Baycol?

They tried me on Baycol after I couldn't take Lipitor, HOLY cow, I thought I was going to fall over and croak on it. The Lipitor gave me very severe GI problems, but the Baycol made me feel like a cripple. I was only on it for about 4 months, half of that time only 3 days a week, but I still could barely make it to the end of my driveway to check the mail and come back. I had to rest for a few minutes so I could climb the 8 stairs to get up to my backdoor. I told the dr. that stuff was awful and said it should be taken off the market, but he said it was just me. Well, 8 months after I dumped it is when it was taken off the market, so I guess it wasn't just me. It took me a good 6 months till I got my strength back, but man, the pain on that stuff was really unbareable, so I feel for ya. Your problems might be due to it, but did U experience the pain while on it, or is this something new? Baycol has been off the market a long time now, but that doesn't mean your problem didn't start with it. Hope U start to feel better, and make the dr. get to the root of your pain.

Good luck......

rstarre,
There are many lawsuits pending against Bayer (maker of Baychol.) God, that stuff was strong...FDA initially topped it out at .3 mg. MAX and slowly upped the allowance to .8 milligrams. August, 2001, after a passle of deaths, Baycol was "voluntarily" withdrawn from the market.

The cases against Bayer are almost all from rhabdomyolysis (severe muscle necrosis) which either does or doesn't damage or destroy the kidneys. That kidney destruction from being flooded with waste material from the muscles is what killed those who died.

Fibromyalgia is a tough case to prove. Most doctors pay it lip service while really doubting its existence. Some view it as a fancy name for "aches and pains." There is no test to confirm it and it's damage is invisible, thus it won't do well in a court of law. Without confirmable damages there is usually no compensation.

There are class actions mentioned all over the net. Perhaps get in touch with one of the law firms and see if you can join one of the actions? (I just watched Erin Brockavitch for the third time  )

Lenin,

How would Crestor compare in strength to Baycol? I thought Crestor was potent myself:dizzy: . I would assume that Baycol would be much stronger than Lipitor, Vytorin, etc???

Judge,

Just speaking from dosages, the maximum for Crestor is condsidered 40 mg.; the maximum for Lipitor is 80 mg.
For Baycol (cerivastatin) the maximum approved dosage was 0.8 mg. That seems to indicate how very strong it was.

I guess I was lucky. Back in 1998 when I decided it ws indeed angina I had been suffering for 5 years in spite of passing a plain vanilla stress test with echo and EKG that said otherwise. I asked my doctor to prescribe Lipitor when I saw my ratio of TC/HDL over 9.
For some fortuitous reason, I had never HEARD of Baycol. Thank the gods.

I didn't realize the doseage of Baycol, no wonder I felt half dead on it. I was taking 5, which I thought was 5 mgs. Like I said, I had no computer so was VERY ignorant about statins at that time. All I know is the Lipitor was 10 mgs., and knocked my TC down from 266 to 168 in less then 3 months, then the GI problems started, and the Baycol was horrid. Dr. should have realized with me being so petite to give me a smaller dose, as just one Tylenol will put me to sleep within a half hr. Me and meds. don't get along........
