My mom is on 40 mg. of lipitor daily, which her doctor put her on instead of Provachol a few months ago because her ldl was 142 and not coming down, cumadin, and a blood pressure pill.
She has been complaining of heartburn everyday and I was wondering if Lipitor could be causing it. A friend of mine is on Lipitor and she also has constant heartburn and takes Nexium everyday.
Does anyone know of lipitor causes heartburn, or is this just a coincidence?
I lowered my total cholesterol from 300 to 172 with 20 MG.Policosinol and diet changes. I read on this message board that Policosinol does not work for everyone, but I read that beeswax must not be in it in order for the supplement to work, I just wanted to pass on the info for people who want to try it. My neighbor is 75 years old and has been taking 20 MG. for years, and his total cholesterol is the same as mine, 172.
The only way to know if it is the Lipitor would to have her dr. take her off it for a few weeks to see if it goes away. Lipitor gave me nasty GI problems, so my dr. took me off, and they subsided. He then switched me to Baycol, and OH BOY, then the fun began, not only GI problems, but horrid muscle pains and weakness. After trying a few other things, my dr. and GI guy came to the conclusion I was not cut out to take statins, so now I try keeping the numbers in check with diet and exercise.
It could be a coincidense, but if she did ok on the other statin, prehaps she may have to go back to it, or try something else. Everyone is different and not all meds. agree with everyone. Hope she feels better and they find a med. that agrees with her ..... :)

I'll second this , statins raised havoc with me . A lot of the normal foods I ate would run right thru me . In a lot of cases I had better be near a bathroom within a hour after eating dinner or going out to dinner . This was totally caused by the statins . Once I stopped taking statins this problem totally resolved itself and I can eat just about anything I want without a problem . My brother inlaw had to stop lipitor for exactly the same reason with regards to foods running right thru him . It's amazes me these drug companies can sit and say very few people have problems . The latest stats I have read is that at least 20 percent have problems with these drugs with the amount that is out there this has to run into the millions between all the statins . Looking forward to the final results of the statin study.

Well that is how I started too, but thought I had just eaten something that didn't agree with me. Of course after it going on for weeks and a trip to the dr., he knew it was no "bug". Luckily he had me stop, and like U, things got alot better. Shortly after he retired and the new dr. thought it was impossible for the statins to be doing it, so switched me to Baycol...OH JOY!!! Needless to say the FUN really began, along with 6 months of a GI guy trying to straighten my system out. He is the one who decided it definitely was the statins, even though he took them himself, he said some folks just can't.
I know when I finally got squared away and we were going to the gym, there were 2 guys who asked my husband if he had that problem, but he told them no, but my wife did, so guess it wasn't just me. Like U Vipper, the long term studies ought to be interesting, and I wonder if I will see a "final" study in my lifetime. I see on tv tonight where they are saying high cholesterol can cause high BP, yet I know many folks with normal BP and high cholesterol and also vice versa. They will make us nuts yet.
Have a good one, and enjoy your evening.....
I banged my toe against a barbell...Oww, it hurts. Must be the Lipitor causing the pain but that awful old FDA won't list it as a side effect!
Plus my close vision isn't as good as it was 10 years ago...quick, tell the FDA.
And I KEEP buying the wrong numbers in the lottery...hey, you never KNOW.
Oh I know one they CAN'T ignore: more people on Lipitor have gray hair than those NOT on Lipitor.
Now, now Lenin, U know noone is blaming statins for banging their toes etc. U have to admit, some folks really do get some nasty side effects from statins, as well as some other meds., and most of the time the drs. do not report it. 2 drs. came to the conclusion I was not cut out for taking statins, but I know darn well it was never reported, cause I asked. Their answer is, it is rare, so unless they get a certain amount of people complaining of the same thing, it is an isolated case. I was on Baycol for almost 2 months, and then tossed them, as they were the worst, and I told the dr. these things are horrid and I wouldn't be surprised to see them off the market. He told me...NEVER, as statins were the best thing since sliced bread. Well, 8 months after I got off, they got pulled. Hmmmm, ya think I was right?

Of course you were right, and that doctor was an idiot to say such a stupid thing. You should have invited him out to lunch, with the stipulation that you'll eat the sliced bread and he'll have to snack on Baycol pills. Well, I've always known that people can be both smart and stupid at the same time, and doctors are living proof of that. If he actually believes that these drugs are so great, it's only because it means more "bread" in his pocket...in the form of perks doled out by the drug companies.

Well the only thing I did say to him was "Geez, I never got any side effects from eating bread", and said it with a VERY straight face. Ya think I annoyed him? ROTFL Like my husband tells me, "U can tell people off with such a straight face, and such a calm tone". Oh well, God made me this way, so the world will just have to take me or leave me......... :)
He really was a statin lover, and I truly believe he thought they were the best thing since sliced bread. Oh well, to each his/her own, but he isn't my dr. anymore, so God bless his patients. As I have always said, if U can take them, have NO problems, then good luck, but for those that can't take them, we just have to do the best we can, and hope things just get better. It is hard to keep the numbers down with diet and exercise, many of us slip up, and many just can't do it. I know sometimes my numbers stink, but it is the best I can do, and I know I am trying my darndest. Guess the chips will just have to fall where they choose to.
Have a good one, stay warm, and get that snow blower ready for tomorrow. Guess ole man winter is coming for a Xmas visit.....
