Long-term statin use - is it worth it? (High Cholesterol board)

1st December 2005
andy,

Firstly, I think it's a slam dunk to recommend staying on the Lipitor especially without muscle pain or liver problems...370 is a VERY risky level of blood fat. Do you have a breakdown on it's components...they matter a LOT. Same info is needed with the 250 total you have now.

All you can do is get screened NOW with a nuclear stress test to see if you have any signs of ischemia caused by restricted arteries. Then you have a baseline to use when you turn 50. There is, however, no way to tell for sure what WILL happen, only what HAS.

True, nobody is certain of the long term risks of statins but the oldest of them has been used for 2 decades and they are among the most taken drugs on the planet...horror stories might be expected to be rampant by now but they aren't. No country has banned them, there have been no recalls before or since BAYCOL in 2001. Baycol was caught and pulled as dangerous within 4 years of it's introduction...simvastain and lovastatin will both be generic next year and have been used in billions of doses for 2 decades, they aren't the "new kids on the block."
I think the horrors of the risk of a 370 cholesterol are pretty well proven.
Each of us must make his own choice. THe more evidence you assimilate the better your choice will be.

mg health,
On the SUPERSIZE ME, I was most struck by how Morgan Spurlock, healthy and lean to start, raised his cholesterol 100 points, developed chest pains and was unable to get to his 6th floor apartment during THE FIRST MONTH of the all-MacDonald's diet. Lord, that was eye-opening. (Seen the movie 6 times :D:D)
