Too Afraid To Take Statins - Advice, Comments Anyone? (High Cholesterol board)

24th February 2005
Lenin, consider yourself VERY lucky that all U got was achy legs for a short time, U are quite lucky. My husband took Lipitor for almost 7 years and now is like Vipper, and on more meds. to kill the pain etc. etc. He always says, "If I knew now then what I know now, I would have never taken that stuff."

I also took it for awhile, very bad GI problems, then they switched me to Baycol, I barely could make it to my street mailbox and back to the house. Now I refuse to take anything. My numbers are a lil above borderline, so the dr. just has me control it with diet and exercise. Yes, I know many folks who take them with no problems, but know alot more who can't handle them.

My biggest complaint is, even when U see it advertised on tv, they tell U if U experience any muscle pain or weakness to tell your dr, but when U do, 90% of them tell ya it is in your head. I would tell anyone considering taking statins, to be careful and if they do experience problems, INSIST to your dr. to try another route to get it under control.

Vipper and I go back quite a few years, and we both know what each other has experienced, so I know where he is coming from, as does my poor husband. He actually had to retire early due to such severe pain and not being able to continue on his job, which he loved, and now he can't even sleep at night without help from meds. due to having to thump his legs and now hands 70% of the nite to dull the pain. Take care all...JJ

No Arizona, I am not familiar with it at all but would like to read more about it myself. I still think alot more studies need to be done about cholesterol, and especially these drugs. They had me on Baycol for awhile, man did that ever toss my system totaly out of wack. It was shortly after I ditched them and said NO MORE, that they took it off the market.

I personaly think drs. should also be educated more in not only medicines, but also nutrishion, alot of them just go by what those reps. tell them. Hubby has 2 cousins who are drs., and one is married to a dr., and my son will be graduating from nursing school in May. Unfortuneatly they all live in FL., but they do admit, they also have to do alot of their own research on drugs, and have people who just can't take statins and many other drugs. Like anything, when it comes to some diseases and drugs, it is like a crap shoot. As my old dr. told me, only U know your body and how it feels, we only go by what U tell us, and try to help. Guess we all just have to hope and pray some good answers will come soon that won't hurt us more then help....

Jim, it certainly sounds like U and Nanc have tried every option out there with lousy results. Like you, all we can do is hope and pray something comes down the road soon to give us all an answer. My girlfriend was on statins for a few yrs. as her numbers go from the 300 to 500 range also, but after many problems with her kidneys, she got disgusted and now refuses to take them also. She won't even ask her dr. what her numbers are anymore, and is constantly going to a urologist for bladder infections and kidney stones, which she never had before. God I wish I had the answer for all of us, I would even give it away free, just to see people beable to get their lives back to normal, as after seeing what some folks have gone thru, including myself, it isn't pretty.

Don't know when your anniversay is, but hope U and Nanc have a good one, and keep the faith, ya never know when that lil miracle just might knock on your door. Take care, and my best to Nanc.....

Hubble, I also couldn't believe the dose, and when I saw how sick hubby got, boy did I ever go off on that dr. I was anything but a lady that day!!! What happened to your daughter also happened to my son. They did a lipid profile shortly after he had lunch, and of course freaked about his numbers. Of course when they did it again with him fasting, it was a great deal lower. I know sometimes drs. do a lipid profile without U fasting, but I believe it shouldn't be done without fasting, but hey, what do I know? :D

When ya get a chance, go rent that movie, if U are a Barbra fan, trust me, U will like it. Sounds like your wife has good taste too. :D That is pretty cute that she asks that they make ya look like Redford, not a bad looking guy at all in my book. Once again, thanx for the thoughts and suggestions, they are appreciated. Monday I am going shopping, and am going to look into that C0Q10 thing, as I have heard good things about it. Hope U have a great weekend, and also hope to chat with ya soon.....
