   Bleeding navel (General Health board)

21st February 2007
Nearly 1.5 years ago my navel started giving out some moist. Problem did not go away in spite of me drying it and using betadyne (iodine solution).

Nearly a year later it suddenly started to bleed. Not much but I would see like a droplet of blood on my navel. At times it was a bit painful, as if I had a needle stuck on it, very uncomfortable. At some point I was also given Bactroban to apply on the navel for up to 10 days.

Anyway, after 1.5 years or so and several visits to the GP I was finally referred to the surgeon. Had to wait around 3-4 weeks for the appointment. I was really scared so I was praying A LOT. Then around a week or two before the appointment it all stopped. I was SUPER HAPPY.

In any case I went to the surgeon's appointment and had an ultrasound done. They moved the scanner around, pressed it on my bellybutton (previously a cause of pain) and nothing!. A week later I was seen by him for the diagnosis and he told me nothing was found. To me this was strange but a relief as well because I thought it could be cancer or something bad.

The problem went away for nearly 5 months. I was abroad and just about a couple of days before my return trip the navel started bleeding again :(. A visited a GP there, again a painful examination (pressing belly button, finger sticking, etc., very uncomfortable). He said it could be a very little hernia because nothing protrudes and there is no excesive pain. I got Contractubex to apply for up to 15 days.

Now, even when I did not apply the cream, in the evening I see a lot of whitish stuff on my navel with a blood stain. Not enough to stain my shirt but nevertheless very worrying.

I don't know what else to do. I was happy it went away but now it has come back. I am going to start cleaning it with hydrogen peroxide (as I used to) and maybe resume the bactroban (not contractubex) after a few days.

I am NOT overweight, just a 6 ft. tall, 68 kg male.

Would that require surgery? would my belly button disappear? has anybody gotten rid of this annoying problem?

I am anxious to see if you get any answers. I have the moist belly button, no blood, but smells bad. I use hydrogen peroxide and it clears right up for quite awhile and then comes back. I am overweight and thought that probably made this happen. I lost some weight and still had the problem. Does anybody know what causes this?

could be a umbilical hernia. As I said I am not overweight but I think it was caused by overstressing the abdomen carrying stuff (heavy travel bags, supermarket bags, etc.) or perhaps due to some weight lifting (only 6.5kg per arm though).

Before my discarge was minimal, just like those one gets in the eye but now it really nearly throws out a lot of stuff, doesn't smell good either :( I am doing Peroxide and tonight resuming on Bactroban (antibacterial creme).

Hopefully somebody has some feedback because I am worried too. Good Luck Sarah.
