tips & advice for rhinoplasty surgery coming up (Cosmetic Surgery board)

7th June 2002
Hi Ladeda!

You'll be fine! Are you going to be under General anesthesia or local?I wanted a rhino since i was 15 and my dream came true on Sept.11th,2001 when the saddly tragedy happend.I had a huge hump on my nosebridge and my tip was wayyyyy to big for my face.Anyway i went to my first doc and she and her staff were so friendly. They took pics and she asked me what my wishes were. She also gave me a list pre and post operative.I deceided to go under the local.I was awake and didn't feel a thing,i had my eyes covered if i wanted to,i even saw my nose pulled up all the way to my eyebrow, not soooo scary.Anyway the local, the
Advantages:
:Usually associated with less postoperative nausea
:time in recovery room is usually shorter
:total dose of medication less
:allows the patient more control over amount of medication
Disadvantages:
:Patient is more likely to remember being awake during the surgery, patient is more likely to feel some discomfort,or pain during the procedure, surgery takes longer if the patient moves more frequently.

General Anesthesis:
Good thing about it:you don't remember anything during the procedure, better for patients who don't wanna remember.
The bad thing about is:
larger doses of anesthetics, recovery room time is longer, and (INCIDENCE OF NAUSEA MAY BE GREAATER)anyway that is way i choosed the local. But it's up to you.
My Presurgical management:
Bactroban cream, you place it of the both sides of the nostrils and ears with a q-tip twice a day starting 3 days before the procedure.
Darvocet N-100,one tablet every 4-6 hours as needed for discomfort.
Valium ne or two tablets every 8hours for muscle spasms or restlessnes. You may take one at bedtime the night before surgery.Do not take any the day of the surgery. It makes you soooooo sleepy.
Phenergan suppositories
anti nausea.
And the pre and post surgical supplements:
Vitamedica surgical program is great. They gave it to me in the office for free. It's a clinical support for surgery.this two part product is designed to iad in wound healing, stimulating the immune system, clotting the blood, protein synthesis and collagen development. Both Am and Pm should be started 2WEEKS before surgery and should be taken on a full stomach.
The Bromelain and Arnica Montana should be started 4 days before the surgery on (EMPTY STOMACH)I didn't have any problems with this supplements. They acctualy helped my bruising a lot.And if you go under general you will feel more nausea and more bruised.Did you doc give you a list with the medication what you shouldn't take before? No hot tubs,no smoking, stop taking herbs, stop taking vitamin E,no aspirin or ibuprofen, cut and color your hair if you are planning to have that done,do it one week before.I'm sure you know and have the Information about on the day of the surgery. And after the surgery every person responds to pain differently. You will have pain killers.I only took 2 and i was fine.Didn't even have to finsh my whole bottle of pain killers. You are going to have Drainage and bleeding for the first 24-48 hours. You will ooze or bleed from incisions. If bleeding seems excessive to you, call your doctor. Some people bruise more than others, continue to take your Vitamedica.Apply insulated ice packs to swollen areas, elevate body parts on pillows, avoid salt intake.I had a great expierience,i would do it again if i would have to.My nose looks beautiful and it makes my facial appearance look better.I did it for myself and i'm more than happy.I hope i answered your questions.I hope you have a book or some info they gave you about Dressings,Sutures, shower & make up,body position, massage and expect stuffines. If you wanna know about my pre and post let me know. Here is a great website if you don't know about it.GO to WWW.*************.NET or www.plasticsurgery.org

These are great to read and know all the information.
I would love to know more about your surgery. What are you having done? Please resond

I'll be under general. I NEED to be asleep. *Laugh* I don't care if I get sick (and oh, I KNOW I'll be getting sick...) but if I was awake I would either (a. faint (b. have a heart attack or (c. faint and then have a heart attack. I don't care how numb or out of it I am. What I want is to be asleep and pretend the magical nose fairies are taking care of everything... ignorance is bliss!

I'm surprised you went through with it on the 11th... I don't think I would have simply because I'd be scared that my doctor would be so shaken up (as I was). Or did it happen while/before your surgery?

Yeah, I've always disliked my nose. Actually, I'd go through phases of liking and then not liking it. My problem is I look absolutely fine face on so I don't have to always SEE my nose problems... But for the past two years I have been debating it and finally decided this is for me.

Bactroban cream? Never heard of it. I was only given arcana.

Got some pain meds.

Sleeping pills might be a good idea... I'm an insomniac on normal days. I'll ask if it would be okay to take some. That'd be wonderful.

Vitamedica? Never heard of it. But I just went and got me some Viactiv with calcium and Vitamin K (for clotting) so hopefully that will work for me.

Bromelain? I have heard other people tell me that pineapple juice does the trick but I was never informed about bromelain itself.

I do have the anica which I will start before surgery. And gel to put on afterwards.

However, even though it's 9 days til surgery, I haven't gotten my info package through the mail ...I mean, if I had known there was so much care involved in pre op preparation I wouldn't have scheduled my surgery for 13 days after my consultation. *laugh* But I don't want to wait any longer for this.

No hot tubs? Check. No smoking? Check. Stop taking herbs? Check. Stop taking vitamin E? Well, starting today... check. Eh heh. No aspirin or ibuprofen? Check, check. Cut and color your hair if you are planning to have that done? Hmm. Well. I can wait a month after surgery to touch up my hair.

"You are going to have Drainage and bleeding for the first 24-48 hours. You will ooze or bleed from incisions." Wooohooooo, see, I think the surgery is worth it for that alone. How many times do I get to ooze from stitches in my nose? Huh? This is a once in a lifetime opportunity that most people miss out on. It's a shame. ;)

"Apply insulated ice packs to swollen areas, elevate body parts on pillows, avoid salt intake."

Can do.

Thanks for your advice! It's greatly appreciated.

How 'healed' were you two months post op? I'm thinking about taking a trip two months after surgery.

What am I having done? Well, my nose is generally long and has a 90o angle. It's perfect face on, but the profile is quite scary. And there's a bit of a hump (I never even noticed until it was pointed out at a consultation I had one year ago). So I am having the hump removed, the bones broken to even out the part where the hump was which unfortunately might narrow my nose :( (I like my width). Then cartilige will be removed in about three more places to help with the projection and the angle of my nose. My doc can explain it better than I; I can only really show it when I can draw a diagram, but he explained very well to me and the operation does make perfect sense. I think I'm in good hands for this.

Thanks again!
