red raw patch on tongue (Open to All Health Related Topics board)

29th February 2008
Hi,

I noticed a slight discomfort when i was drinking some water yesterday and when i looked at my tongue in the mirror I noticed that the back of the tongue looked like it has a few tiny 'spot' like bumps and a very tender, red patch surrounding them which runs down my tongue a bit. Looks like a thick line.

Now...The evening i noticed this, I had taken some bactrim pills for a cyst on my cheek that morning. I thought the tongue thing could be a reaction, although surely that's way to soon for a reaction to happen. Within 8 hours??

You were on Bactrimin which is an antibiotic and can cause overgrowth of yeast. It can cause thrush in the mouth which causes the symptoms you described. Although I have never heard of it happening after the first dose. Perhaps it could be a mild allergic reaction to the medicine. Did you have any difficulty breathing or swelling associated with the tongue issue (this would indicate an allergic reaction)? Go to the doctor and they can scrape your tongue to detect any growth of yeast. They can prescribe an anti-fungal medication. DON'T FREAK about oral cancer....it's not that. Look up thrush and see if it similar to your experience REMEMBER THOUGH...they often show EXTREME pictures on the internet. Good Luck.
