Depends...how old is the scar? You don't want to use neosporin or bacitracin on a new incision after about 3 days...you'll develop a rash from using it to much. The ointment will keep it stay moist; and the intention of a new incision is to keep it dry. If you have a beefy redness, you may have an infection - staph or cellulitis- so you need to see your doctor again.
If it's an old incision - and just falls along an area where irritation can occur - it takes time - 6 months to 1 year for the incision's redness and firmness to mature and fade. Gentle massage and warm compresses (warm - not hot -washcloth) 3 times a day will help this progress faster and diminish pain.
Good luck! ;)
