HELP! Bad eczema for 4 year old (Skin Problems board)

25th February 2007
Hi,
I have two children who had really bad eczema as babies. The thing that helped them was essential fatty acids, borage/flax oil - high in gla's; probiotics and zinc supplements. I also used Florasone, a cream that does not damage the skin like cortisone but still helps with the itchiness. Also, it is important to know if there is a topical infection before treating with Florosone/cortisone. I used Bacitracin since it is better to use single agent antibacterials with children.

Make sure if you use probiotics that they are age appropriate since the bacteria is different at different ages.

My children's eczema subsided within weeks of using the above treatments and now at 3 and 5 if they start to get a patch of eczema, I supplement with the borage/flax and zinc and it resolves immediately.

Best of luck, I know it is so difficult having an itchy child.
