I would think your doctor would have prescribed you an antiobiotic to kill the infection more quickly, but...since he suggested other methods, I have an idea for you.
What type of off-the-shelf cream are you currently using? If it's a bacterial infection...you may want to try using an antibiotic ointment--pretty much, Bacitracin ointment, or something similar. It has antibacterial properties that would help to kill the bacteria in your skin.
Before applying Bacitracin, I would suggest gently washing the affected area with Dial Antibacterial Soap, as this is one of the strongest kinds out there in the stores. DO NOT RUB the area dry with a towel, PAT it dry. Try not to reuse the same towel all the time, otherwise you'd be rubbing old bacteria back into the infected area every time. Then, apply the Bacitracin ointment. And obviously, picking and scratching the area isn't going to help, so try to avoid doing that as much as possible. ;) And if you'd like, you can apply the cream that you are already using, at night before you go to bed.
If you do this every day (morning and night, maybe), I would think that it would improve your skin's condition dramatically in a week or two. :) Best of luck.
