This is not how they said my recovery would be! (Foot Problems board)

6th August 2004
Hi again everyone. Yeah, I am sorry to have been gone so long, but my computer is downstairs and hopping up and down the staircase is not one of my more favorite things to do.

The incision still hasn't closed. I am now almost 5 weeks post op and it is now scabbed over in that area, but the scab is very sore and it cracks open and bleeds.

I am frustrated with what many here have alluded to and that is the "Oh that's normal" comments from the doctor. If it's normal, WHY DIDN"T YOU TELL ME IT MIGHT HAPPEN?????

the whole process has been frustrating. First, I saw the doctor for a couple of seconds before the surgery, didn't see him afterwards, even though I was in the hospital more than the "few hours" it was supposed to take. The day after the surgery a resident came in and spoke to me for about 19 seconds. Then I didn't see the doctor until I called with problems.

Shortly thereafter he was on vacation for ten days and his assistant removed the stitches. She did the same thing with the steri strips. I didn't see the doctor for those ten days, and the next time I saw him he noted that the incision wasn't closed and put some bacitracin (I think, the orange stuff...) on it and put it back in a partial cast. that was when I had the injection for the zapping pain on the top of my foot.

I took the cast off last Sunday night because I knew something was wrong. My ankle felt like it was totally on fire and I just knew it wasn't right. Thank goodness I did, because it was grotesquely infected.

I see the doc again on Monday and I am just really frustrated with the entire process and everything. Thanks for the support and all the information. I get more info here than I do from the doctor!
