The key is keeping bacteria out of the wound. Bacteria will cause infection, slow the healing process, and cause scarring. An antibiotic ointment or cream such as neosporin, polysporin or bacitracin is the only thing that will keep bacteria out without further irritating the wound or surrounding skin.
