Normal Peak Flow Rate For Me? (Asthma board)

14th April 2007
no dr has ever said you have asthma to me but ive been being treated for it..its due to my allergies started 3 years ago when i woke up choking and couldnt breathe at first i was just given an albuterol inhaler used that for 3 years shortly after the first year i was no longer under insurance so i kept using the albuterol had to use it on a daily basis sometimes more then once a day but couldnt do nothing since wasnt covered by insurance then all the sudden after using the albuterol this was 2 months ago it caused extreme anxiety upset stomach loss of appetite nashua fast heartbeat and i felt like tightness in my chest so between feb and now ive been to the er twice has blood urine chest xrays and ekg done both times everything came back fine went to a private dr which i had to pay for due to no insurance and he also did an ekg and was all good and he gave me singulair a new rescue inhaler xopenex and azmacort but ive been to scared to start any of these cause of whats been going on this past 2 months with medicines and how they been affecting me this past week i dunno if it was allergies or cold but i felt pressure in my head and ears and sneezing runny and stuffy nose then all that went away except for my headache every now and then but after that all went away i started feeling like a slight tightness in my chest every now and then or i like gasp for air i only wheeze if i breathe out hard so i started useing the peakflow reguarly the past few days and its been 450-500 sometimes a little less then 450 and when i went to the er the first time and he took my peakflow and it was 450 he said that was normal and i think when i did it at the dr it was the same thing.so right now im breathing difficulties that i feel are like the ones i had when i went to the dr and er and nothing was found wrong and i been doing my peakflow frequently and its steady at the same numbers between 450-500..i know i need to get to a specialist to be tested and go through all the allergy tests and stuff but im waiting on my insurance to go through shouldnt be much longer but like i dont get this feeling and what makes it worse like at night when i feel it i get a little anxiey ridden which proably makes it worse

yea i been taking alavert once a day for almost a week now didnt really notice a difference..its just this breathless feeling thats been bothering me for 3-4 days now where i gasp for air or feel a little tightness alot of times i feel fine but then it just comes suddenly i havnt been choking my peak flow is normal in mine and your eyes no wheezing only if i breath out very hard sometimes..when i first got the new meds i tried azmacort for 2 days and it felt like it really dried out my throat felt like it was closing almost thats why i stopped that and with the singulair i really want to take it but ive heard alot of horror stories about it but just as many bad things about it ive heard good things so im torn im very prone to side effects as of late since all this started in febuary with the alubterol liek after that my dr gave me xanax to combat the anixiety and after 4 days on that i started feeling even worse with anxiety so im just like terrified to start anything new cause i dont wanna feel any worse

It gets worse at night because if I remember correctly, something to do with mold spores multiply around 4AM (I start having trouble like clockwork around 2:35am to 4:30am with stuffy nose, slight increased trouble breathing). That's just means from what my allergy specialist said, it's a mold allergy. You might have dust & dust mite allergy too. If you can get a decent allergy cover for your bed & pillow. They make them without that annoying all plastic all over now too. It helps a lot with the dust/dust mite allergy but only if I wash it once a week in as hot of water as possible with a cup of bleach added to the water. I gotta take it easy on the bleach tho... It bugs my lungs.
The only thing so far that helps me with the night time problems (and I have tried a lot, singulair, clarinex-d, claritin, nasacort, allegra -i'm on this now for outside allergies, umm... you name i've probably tried it. Most either give me mild heart beat issues or make my anxiety go up except for the allegra. BUT for sure, my life saver so far for night time & even day time if I get too much fluid in lungs or nasal stuffiness is generic mucinex & generic mucinex with phenylephrine HCI. All mucinex is, is "Guaifenesin". I have some Guaifenesin pills without phenylephrine HCI & another bottle with it. The phenylephrine HCI is a decongestant that does not have any Pseudoephedrine in it (that's what causes the heart issues). My asthma & allergy doc said to take 600mg of guaifenesin every 4 hours as needed. The phenylephrine I only take when I have a stuff nose/swollen nasal passages. Be careful taking this though. If taken regularly can cause blood pressure to go up. It happened to me only once though in a year. That time I was taking it every 4 hrs for 2 days straight which I never do. I take it is my situation is very bad or just right when I need it. It lasts for 4 hrs.
I'm also on azmacort steroid inhaler & xoponex as needed (rarely now).
Good luck & if you need anything, just ask.
