I believe that for the most part, these are the BEST therapies we have NOW. Inhaled steroids are still very new. Inhaled steroids can reduce your immune system, but so can bad habits of not washing your hands, etc. As a severe asthmatic myself, I know that these treatments did not make me this way. When I was eight I was given azmacort and I never took it and I'm still severe.
I may be wrong (forgive me if I am), but it sounds like you're looking something to blame for having asthma forever. It is a lifelong disease, even if you "grow out of it." Some people are just more twitchy....
