new treatments for Parkinson's disease (Parkinson's Disease board)

Angel

I see you are from Rochester - are you seeing docs at U of R Neurology. I see Dr B there.

What meds/suppliments are you using

My understanding is that the "newest" standard theories are to start with the dopamine agnosts(sp?) to help the body make more dopamine and Azilect to use it more efficiently. I saw a quick improvemnt with Requip, the Azilect is more subtle but the doc says there is some possible evidence of it delaying progression.

I bought some coq10(?) but haven't reallytried it - the doc says no firm evidence there.

[QUOTE=XX99;3509131]There's a new Parkinson's Disease supplement called Dopavite. It works slowly - months not hours - but can be used alongside any Parkinson's drugs being taken. People taking it have been reducing their symptoms.

[INDENT][COLOR="Green"]Patients taking certain prescription MAO inhibitors (Azilect, Parnate), with Tyrosine type products (eg. Dopavite), may cause acute hypertensive reactions [headache, etc].

Normal doses of tyrosine, such as those in the Parkinson's Disease supplement Dopavite, have never been shown to cause acute hypertensive reactions in people taking MAO inhibitors. This is because the use of tyrosine is biochemically regulated by the body. Consequently, only as much use of tyrosine will be made as is needed. The people I know who are taking MAO inhibitors have had no problems at all, and have been slowly but continuously reducing their Parkinson's Disease symptoms. Very high doses of tyrosine might overload the system, but the doses of tyrosine in Dopavite are only the normal daily requirements.
