Migraine for 5 days and counting...a little help please (Headaches board)

15th June 2006
I woke up with this migraine 5 days ago and it has not gone away yet. I have gone to the doctors and they gave me Axert and Midrin which I have been taking non stop. The pain will go away after I take both meds and I think I am fine and releaved of the pain and then bam, the pain returns sharp and unexpected. It hurts to see, it hurts to keep my eyes open. I feel dizzy inside, and my legs shake when I walk down any stairs. I have had nausea and vomiting but I have had that for almost 2 months now (docs says anxiety).
I used to get migraines all the time but never this long or this bad.
Any advice? Anyone, anyone?

Hi Shaj,

You mention that you have had migraines for a while but not this bad or this long.

Is the pain the same as what you have had before or is it in a different place? Is it pulsating or different?

Main reason I as is that if you are getting really bad h/a that is different from your regular migraine pain, your Dr. should be taking it seriously and perhaps running some other tests?? Have you had an MRI and/or CAT in the past?

I don't think there have been any studies about how safe it is to take a med. like Axert non-stop for days on end. How many have you been taking each day?

I see you posted on JUne 15th. Has it gone away now or?????

Still fighting the migraine. I have been taking Axert, once a day and following that with Midrin. The Axert doesn't really help. After day 3 of taking that, I stopped and just took the Midrin. I like the Midrin but it really affects me. It helps subside the pain for a couple of hours but it makes me feel tired, and like I am about to fall out. My body becomes too relaxed on it. I take it mainly at night so I can sleep.

My migraines in the past were usually brought on by tension in my shoulders and neck. I would get the usual headache but when I got a migraine, I would see stars flashing first and then it came on. Now there are no warnings. Its starts as sharp pains above my front left eye going towards the back of my head. A few of those in a row and then my head fills up with pain all over. It feels like someone is taking sections of my head from the inside and pressing them together in between their hands. My head is also filling up with pressure like when you are on an airplane and I feel like it is going to explode. I am also still having sensitivity to light and sound. Right now the pain has settled above my eyes and to the middle of my head.

For about a month or so before this, I have had a lot of anxiety, nausea, vomiting, stomach pains, and regular headaches. With this migraine, I have had more nausea, more vomiting, more stomach pains. I have nasuea with or without food and my stomach constantly feels like it is starving. I can eat till I am full, and I will still feel like my stomach hasn't eaten in days. I am not sure if that has anything to do with the migraine or not.

I just want to wake up without any pain, without any nausea, and without any vomiting.

Hi ie,

Do you have a diagnosis from your Dr. that you are getting migraine headaches, or is he just assuming that. Much of what you describe does sound like migraines, but some of it doesn't.

Never the less you shouldn't have to be in pain like that for day after day after day. Generally when a bad migraine 'sets' itself and you haven't been able to abort it at the beginning or take some medication and perhaps sleep it off your Dr. should be taking some action to end it. Whether it is having you come in for a shot of morphine or demerol (in the U.S. they seem to use Demerol more and morphine more in Canada - go figure), or better yet, have the Dr. come to your house and give you the injection (s) there her/himself.

For more than obvious reasons it is not good for a person to be in bad pain for long periods of time. I'll use the elephant analogy!!

If an elephant steps on your foot, you scream and then he steps off you have 'acute' pain. Your brain sends the right signals and you ice it, take pain medication like Tylenol 3 or stronger if it is really bad.

If the elephant steps on your foot and stays on your foot weird things can happen when you are in pain for a long period of time. What happens is that when the elephant steps off of your foot, your brain doesn't stop sending pain signals so you might be in pain for a long long time. Some people that have had a leg amputated get terrible pain radiating from where their leg used to be. That is why it is important to stop a bad headache as fast as you can.

Axert is a triptan med. that is for migraines, but it is best used to ABORT the headache and prevent it from coming. Usually at the first sign of a migraine you would take the Axert. Some people get great results from Axert and if you don't, there are many other triptan meds. out there right now.

Have you tried preventative meds.? An elimination diet? Relaxation tech.? Going to bed at the same time every night and gettting up at the same time every morning? There are lots of other things and I'm just curious whether or not your Dr. and you have tried to prevent the migraines?

But you really need to get ahold of your Dr. and tell him how long you have been in bad pain. Has he ever given you any strong meds. to get rid of a really bad h/a??

He has give me Axert and Midrin. I went to a neurologist years ago for the Migraines. He gave me some meds to take when I first saw the stars and he said if that doesn't work then he will put me on daily preventative meds. After I got off the birthcontrol pill I was on, all my head pain subsided. I have been under a lot of stress lately and dealing with anxiety too. I don't go to sleep at the same time every night b/c I have trouble sleeping. I try to go to bed at the same time even if I am not falling asleep. I also tend to wake up several times in the middle of the night and sometimes I cannot get back to sleep. I drink plenty of water and I try to stick to a somewhat healthy eating plan. I have eliminated meats and chicken. I eat those about once every two or three weeks, I barely drink soda and never drink coffee. I don't eat fried foods that much either. I eat a lot of sandwiches and salads usually. I do have bad allergies and bad sinuses. I take Mucinex D and Alavert D. Other meds have not worked for me.
