First me, now my wife???? (Multiple Sclerosis board)

20th March 2008
Klos, thats one of the strangest stories I have ever heard of...and its not entirely impossible that where you live, the environment, etc could be the link- but I only say this because they do not know what causes MS...its not likely. The leaning towards people having a predisposition towards getting MS is pretty strong...the studies show that certain genetic factors are indicators that people can be predisoposed to auto-immune diseases...this would include Lupus, MS and even rheumatoid arthritis...no one knows for sure.

You asked about waiting to have a family...thats going to be entirely up to you. There are a few reasons to wait- the possiblity that one or both of you might want to consider going on DMDs (avonex, betaseron, rebif, copaxone or Tysabri) that would rule out pregnancy....but the other side of it is the sooner you get her pregnant and have a child, the sooner she could go on DMDs to prevent relapse...whatever you decide there will be pros and cons- and of course the never ending question of what will happen if both of you get sick, have relapses and have an infant to take care of....do you have a good support system? grandparents who will helpk perhaps? THe risk of passing this onto a child exists- but again, theres no proof that you will- and the risk to date is less than 5%..so, that shouldnt be stopping you unless you feel SO strongly that you wouldnt want to have a child who might inherit this disease.

I feel for you (and your wife) this must be very difficult...but in some ways, it will make you stronger..no one understands this crazy disease unless they have it. Sharing it with your spouse would definately be one way of having them understand what you are going thru...
Best of the best to you...
Nikki
